SUMMER WATERSHED WORKSHOP

This NOAA Gulf of Mexico BWET program is offering a summer professional development workshop

Dates: June 28, 29 and 30, 2017 (9 am – 3pm each day)

Join a growing network of educators who are incorporating watershed knowledge into their teaching.

What? Athree-day summer workshop to learn how you can incorporate Meaningful Watershed Education Experiences (MWEEs) into your teaching.




Location?The workshop will take place at the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Headquarters in Baton Rouge.

What is the Format?The workshop includes three full days of classroom and field-based experience in understanding our watersheds through map exploration and science investigation.

Who is Eligible?The workshops will give priority to teachers of grades 4-12 who teach at schools located in the Pontchartrain Watershed.. The parishes included are: Plaquemines, St. Bernard, Orleans, Jefferson, St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, St. James, Ascension, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Washington, St. Helena, Livingston, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, and West Feliciana. You do not have to be a science teacher, although much of the content will be geared towards science. We welcome a cross curricular groups.

Through this workshop, you will:

  • Use maps to learn about the watershed. Focus on the Pontchartrain Watershed and its component watersheds such as the Amite, Tangipahoa and the many other rivers of the Florida Parishes, as well as the estuarine systems towards the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Incorporate hands-on data collection following GLOBE Program ( hydrosphereprotocols. You will learn how to collect and interpret water quality data and plan ways to bring these methods to your students. Sign up to become a GLOBE teacher and continue to learn and participate in the GLOBE program!
  • Explore part of the watershed on a day-long service-learning field trip!

  • Discover ways to involve your students in watershed field trips and “MWEEs”.

You will receive:Lessons and implementation ideas as well as water quality equipment for sampling with your students; Resource examples that will help you bring watershed science to your students. A $100 stipend for full participation.
