Math 6 only: If you do not turn in any one item on time, you will automatically be switched to the Interview Project. It is very important that everything is turned in on time.

Purpose of this Assignment:

Create a 3 to 4-minute video demonstrating the real-world application of a math concept learned in class (ex: fractions/equations used to determine measurements in cooking or home repair projects, etc). This video should identify and explain the concept being applied and outline a math question or questions that viewers should be able to solve after watching the video. You will present your video, and the class will be asked to solve the question(s) presented in your video.

A. Video Project Sheet (25 points):

  1. Concept (5 points)

·  Question: What “real-world” activity can I record to demonstrate a key math concept to my classmates? (Ask yourself this question: When have I used a mathematical concept we learned in class outside of school? You may also ask your parents for examples of these concepts in their work/home life).

·  Examples: cooking, eating out, working out, shopping, sports

·  Ideas: If you are stuck, go through the textbook or IXL and look for a problem that you can use or apply or “act out” in order to demonstrate practical application of that concept. Keep in mind that the more experience you have with the content, the better and easier the video will be to make.

CONCEPT DUE IN CLASS: Monday, May 1st. Concept must be approved.

  1. Mathematical Question (10 points):

·  What math question/questions do you hope viewers will be able to answer after watching your video?

i.  Your video must show the solution to your question.

ii.  In the video, you must explain every concept or skill required to answer the question(s). If you need help with this step, ask for help during class before the project is due.

MATHEMATICAL QUESTION DUE IN CLASS: Monday, May 1st (must be approved).

  1. Video Outline/Script (10 points): Due Monday, 05/01/2017 (part of Video Project Sheet)

B. Video Clip (25 points): The unedited video must be transferred to a computer in the classroom on or before Thursday, 05/11/2017 How can I transfer my video?

o  Use Airdrop in the classroom – works from an iPhone to a class computer.

o  Jump drive brought to class

o  Email Mr. Bacak the video (if the file is small enough)

o  If there are issues getting the video from a phone to a classroom computer, we will figure it out!

C. Final Video (100 points):

·  Basis of Evaluation (40 points per item):

i.  Is the video creative and entertaining, reflecting genuine effort to create a thoughtful and effective end-product?

ii.  Does the video show the real-world application of a math concept in a way that is appropriate/interesting for middle school students?

iii.  Does the content include a clear statement of purpose? (application of a specific math concept, specifying what question(s) will be demonstrated/explained in the video)

iv.  Is the video and its explanation of a math concept presented in a thorough and logical manner?

v.  Will the viewers have all the information to answer the question(s) presented in the video?

·  Quality/Editing (30 points):

o  Videos cannot be longer than 4 minutes.

o  Effort to ensure top quality content and presentation should be evident.

o  The video should be well-edited with smooth and thoughtful transitions. Audio and any other graphic enhancements should be well-used – entertaining, appropriate, and not distracting from the math concept being demonstrated.

·  Submission/Transfer (20 points)

o  The final video needs to be transferred to Mr. Bacak by Thursday, May 18th.

o  There will be a 25-point deduction for every day the video is late.

·  Presentation (10 points):

o  All videos submitted will be presented to the class, and the class will vote on the best video per class.

o  THIS SHOULD NOT BE THE FIRST TIME SOMEONE WATCHES YOUR VIDEO.

o  The overall winner will receive 10 bonus points!

Video Presentations will be May 22nd and May 23rd.
