Update on the Search for the Next Dean of theCollege of Education and Allied Professions
This serves to update you on the progress to date related to the search for the next Dean of theCollege of Education and Allied Professions. We will provide members of the campus community with regular updates on the progress of the search over the next few months.
I am pleased to inform you that we have retained a search firm, Academic Search, Inc., to assist us with our search. Academic Search, a consulting firm that has worked exclusively for over 30 years in searches for presidents and senior administrators in higher education, is assisting the Search Committee. Maya Ranchod Kirkhope will serve as the firm’s senior consultant to WesternCarolinaUniversity and will provide counsel for the CEAP Dean Search Committee’s work throughout the course of the search. She will help to lay the groundwork for the critical next steps, develop the key criteria required for the position, and utilize the firm’s extensive network to solicit nominations and recommendations.
Ms. Kirkhope visited campus on June 26 & 27, 2008 and met with the Search Committee and with members of the campus community to learn more about the institution and the specific desired characteristics for the new Dean. Based on her research and conversations, Ms. Kirkhope will prepare a draft job description and profile describing the key needs and priorities, and a related set of desired characteristics and talents for our next Dean.The Search Committee will review and edit these documents and we will make the documents available on this website in the next few weeks.Once the job description and profile are posted, we ask that you pay particular attention to the skills and attributes most highly desired in the next CEAP Dean. We will advertise thisposition in national publications like the Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Education, Women in Higher Education and AACTE. In addition, hundreds of source and prospect letters will be mailed to individuals around the country who may be interested in the position or who may be able to recommend individuals for this position.

To give you a sense of the timeline of the search, the position will be advertised in late July and August and a review of candidates will begin in mid-September and will continue until the position is filled.It is our expectation that the new Dean will take office as of January 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter.
