8th grade integrated Science
Standard 1, Objective 1
Title: Alike or Different
Description: Students will create a comparison chart showing similarities and differences between chemical and physical properties.
Materials: Student sheet, textbook
Time Needed: 30-40 minutes
Background Knowledge: None needed
Procedures:
1. Explain to students that they will first use their books to identify characteristics of chemical and physical properties. They will write these in the table provided.
physical / ChemicalCan be observed with senses and tools / Can’t be observed with out changing the substance
Describes the substance’s appearance / Describes how the substance reacts with other substances
Useful to identify an unknown / Useful to identify an unknown
Used to separate mixtures / Used to separate compounds
Used to classify substances / Used to classify compounds
Used to choose a material for a certain purpose / Used to choose a material for a certain purpose
Can’t be determined by touching or viewing the substance
2. After filling in their tables, students should fill in the Venn Diagram below it. They should find at least 2 similarities. Differences will be easier.
3. Write the following examples of properties on the board and have students place them in the Venn diagram also:
a. has color
b. bubbles in water
c. rusts
d. has shape
e. has volume
f. has mass
g. burns
h. hard
i. melts
j. flexible
Scoring Guide:
1. Student identifies 4 characteristics of chemical and physical properties….4 pts
2. Student identifies 2 similarities……………………………………………….4 pts
3. Student correctly places examples in correct circle on Venn diagram…….4 pt

Alike or Different?
Introduction: In this activity you will learn about the similarities and differences between chemical and physical properties.
Procedure:
1. Read the articles on Chemical and Physical Properties
2. Write down Characteristics of physical and Chemical properties the Venn Diagram. In the area where the circles overlap, write down similarities between chemical and physical changes. In the areas of the circles that do not overlap, write down differences.
4. Use the list of chemical and physical properties and fill them in the correct locations on your Venn Diagram.
5. Answer the analysis questions.
shiny / stinksBubbles in water / rusts
Has shape / Has volume
Has mass / Has density
burns / hard
melts / flexible
Transfers heat / Is poisonous
Chemical Properties Physical Properties
Analysis:
1. Which properties describe what the substance is like?
2. Which properties describe how the substance reacts with other substances?
3. Describe the physical properties of a candle.
4. Describe the chemical properties of a candle.
