A Little History of Early St Ives
1788, 16th April. First Europeans set foot in St Ives area. Governor Arthur Phillip lead a party of explorers through heavily timbered forest on the northern shore of what is now MiddleHarbour. They followed a steep valley and at about 4pm they reached a point where the tide ceased and the fresh water flowed. At this point, now called Bungaroo, they camped for the night. The next morning they ascended the northern side of the valley and continued their journey along the ridge (now Mona Vale Road) to the west.
1813. First saw mill situated on the corner of Mona Vale Road and Cowan Road (now the site of the Pymble Golf Club House ).
1890. CentralPublic School opened, the original school house still stands.
1913, 24th May. St Ives Progress Association formed. Request to Deputy Post Master General for direct postal deliveries. A slaughter yard for St Ives?
1914. Light rail proposed from Gordon to the coast via St Ives. Deputy Prime Minister asked to assist in having urgent telegrams delivered to St Ives.
1915. Request to gas company for street lighting. Council offers to supply street name posts provided residents erect them.
