HOLY DOORS

SOME IDEAS FOR ART AND DESIGN

Make ‘doors’ that open to reveal images (some ideas for images below.)

Doors could be designed in DT lesson to fit an A4 sheet of card / paper – made out of balsa wood, card, paper; different shapes / sizes. Decorate with patterns, symbols, cut-outs, texture rubbings. Printing (link with Art).

Images could be created in Art lesson – A4 or smaller. Oil pastel or crayon/water colour resist, fine line pen (photocopy to fix) then add watercolour; paper mosaic, stained glass effect, weaving, pastel drawings, collage inside a box (make doors for box)

Themes could include the following:

Open Doors to the Word of God

Old Testament – images from stories / psalms

Lives of saints – school patron saint – share with another local school

New Testament – favourite parables / gospel readings; work of the apostles

Open Doors to the Wonder of God‘s World

Creation Story, the wonders of the animal kingdom, see the beauty in detail – close observation of the natural world: water, flowers, plants, shells (link with science).

Caring for our world, valuing what we have, being grateful.

Use recycled paper / card where possible (caring for environment)

Write prayers / poems to go with images.

Open Doors to the Liturgical year and the Church

Lent, Easter, Saints feast days, Holy days, the Mass, the sacraments, Vocations Sunday, Education Sunday.

The Catholic Church and other places of worship.

Open Doors to Hearts and Minds

Schools vision / mission / values.

Mindfulness.

Meditation.

Reflection / stillness, silence.

EPR / SEAL

Welcoming.

Charity work.

Caring for / helping others.

Closed Doors- How does it feel?

Exclusion – the poor, homeless, people with a disability, racism, refugees, people who are bullied / left out.

How did Jesus open doors for others?

Jesus forgiving Zachaeus, welcoming Mary Magdalen, curing the leper, welcoming and accepting all those who were poor and neglected.
