NM History Final Exam – Essay

* In-class research and writing days: May2, 7;2018. Essay due start of class May 9

* Directions:

* write a 2+ page essay,

* Use MLA format, including in-text citations and a Works Cited Page,

* Comprehensive coverage of the issue.

* Address ONE of the following trends or issues surrounding New Mexico history:

  1. Compare and contrast the relationships over time of Native American tribes in New Mexico with other cultures. People/events to include: Kit Carson, Long Walk, Bosque Redondo, Indian Wars, Maria Martinez, homesteading, Taos Arts Colony, Mabel and Tony Lujan, Santa Fe Fiestas, Indian Dances, Boarding Schools, Bursum Bill/ All Pueblo Council, Blue Lake, Dorothy Dunn, Bureau of Indian Affairs, John Collier, IRA (1934), Taylor Grazing Act, Code Talkers, Miguel Trujillo (suffrage), Larry Casuse, hate crimes, Indian Gaming

2. Analyze the geographic, economic, social and political factors of New Mexico that impact United States and world history, to include:

A. land grant and treaty issues unresolved to present day and continuing to impact relations between and among citizens at the state, tribal and federal government levels;

B. role of water issues as they relate to development of industry, population growth, historical issues and current acequia systems/water organizations;

ECONOMIC:

A. urban development;

SSOCIO-POLITICAL

A. role of the federal government (e.g., military bases, national laboratories, national parks, Indian reservations, transportation systems, water projects);

B. unique role of New Mexico in the 21st century as a “minority majority” state;

3. Analyze the role and impact of New Mexico and New Mexicans in WWII. Make sure to include the following terms/people: Navajo Code talkers, NM National Guard, internment camps, Manhattan Project, Los Alamos, Bataan Death March, Robert Oppenheimer, Gen Leslie Groves, POW camps.

4. Analyze the impact of the arts, sciences and technology of New Mexico since World War II.

TECHNOLOGY: technological advances, scientific developments, high-tech industries, federal laboratories

Grading:

This Essay will have two double weighted grades attached to it – writing and tests. The rubric follows:

Specifications Checklist / Rubric (score 1-10 for each element):

1. Argument

a. Use an attention-getting “ hook” to interest your audience.

b. Choose a strong, defendable stance for your thesis statement that answers your question in a direct and succinct way

c. Use clear, directed topic sentences to begin each paragraph.

d. Use transitional sentences to connect ideas

2. Evidence:

a. Interweave at least three facts and references to back up your claims.

b. Use reliable sources (especially from SFCC or elportalnm.org)

c. Use in-text citations

d. include a works cited page at the end. At least 3sources needed.

3. Writing Style:

a. Keep your sentences short and to the point.

b. Use precise language and strong action verbs.

c. Be authoritative and firm

4. Persuasion:

a. provide background information,

b. Use logic and rationality more than pathos (emotion)

c. Acknowledge, and refute, arguments against you (counterclaims), or at least address any controversy surrounding your question

5. Audience:

a. obviously, Sarah is your audience, but you may indicate that this is written for aspecific audience other than her.

b. Avoid offending audience by insulting his/her/their intelligence and/or beliefs.

c. Use language that connects to, rather than alienates, your audience

d. Address any biases you may possess, or any lack of knowledge that may tinge your perspective.
