3/D ART ASSIGNMENT #1

ASSIGNMENT:VENETIAN CAST MASKS

POINT VALUE:16 POINTS (all three stages combined)

For our initial project, we will design and create a mask in the style of the Venetian “Carnavale”.You will be designing your project first on paper and modeling it out of Plasticine, which is green oil-based clay that hardens very slowly. After modeling, we will make a mold using Plaster of Paris. When the plaster mold is ready, we will pour slip, or liquefied clay, into the mold, which is casting. After the clay masks are fired, we will paint them and add other decorations (assembly).

For this project, like most art projects, you need to plan ahead. It will be important to have a design worked out on paper before you start modeling. You have many choices in terms of subject matter; try a variety of different ideas before settling on what you will make. You should experiment with adding decorations to your mask, such as sequins, fabric, bells, foil paper, glitter, feathers, beads, etc.

THE THREE STAGES OF PRODUCTION:

1.MASK DESIGN ON PAPER:

You must have a refined drawing that shows your mask’s shape, features, decorations, colors, depths and overall appearance. You need to submit at least 2 sketches, one frontal view and one profile view, for your grade. The more time and energy you spend making a finished and complete design, the easier the rest of this project will be. Keep all of your rough drafts; don’t throw them away because they will be turned in as well.

A good plan is a great help in making a successful mask!

2.MODELING IN PLASTICINE:

You must have a mask that is finished and smooth. Avoid undercuts and severe angles, as well as small projecting details. Use the appropriate tools to create a variety of textures on your mask. Make sure your mask is a minimum of ½” in depth at its narrowest point. You may use mirrors to mimic correct facial features and proportions if you wish. Remember that a variety of depths generally make for a more interesting mask.

3.DECORATED & COMPLETED MASK:

Finish strong! The time you have invested thus far will be worthwhile if you are neat and creative with your decorating. Experiment with paint colors, fur, fabrics, beads, glitter, gloss, etc. Taking the time to plan your final decorations will really make this project work! You may spray a clear-coat gloss finish on your mask if you prefer.

HELPFUL INFORMATION FOR ASSIGNMENT #1

Cast Masks

Step ONE:

Take the time to make a great design! Planning out your project will make the modeling much easier. Gather reference material and work hard to make sketches that can be used as a blueprint for your mask. Masks may be of people, cats, clowns, witches, birds, fictional characters, etc. Remember that you may add other objects such as glitter, sequins and feathers to your mask. Design your mask so it does not require undercuts, and don’t make it too thick or too thin.

Step TWO:

Begin modelingyour mask in green Plasticine. This type of clay is oil based and will not harden. Use a variety of clay working tools, such as a loop and rib, to form the Plasticine into the shape of your mask. Your fingers are often the most effective tools for modeling. You will tear up your Plasticine into pieces and “warm it up” before using it. This is done by squeezing and pulling/rolling it so it gets soft. Be sure the Plasticine does not touch the tabletops or get dirty.

Step THREE:

Make a mold by pouring Plaster of Paris over your completed Plasticine mask. The plaster will harden and leave a mold for you to pour slip into. Be sure to coat you mask first in Vaseline to prevent sticking and breaking of your work.

Step FOUR:

Remove the green Plasticine from your mold and prepare your slip (liquefied clay) so it can be poured into the mold by stirring it.

Step FIVE:

Pour slip into the mold and allow it to dry for a few days. The mold can then be removed, leaving only the clay casting behind.

Step SIX:

Fire your clay mask in the kiln. After firing, your project can be painted, and other objects may be added to decorate it. You may choose to coat it with clear gloss spray.
