Spare Station Operator

Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro Inc. requires a Spare Station Operator. Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro Inc. is a MunicipalElectric Distribution Company within the City of Kitchener and the Township of Wilmot, with a total service area of 409 square kilometers. Our staff of approximately 177 serves over 90,000 customers.

Primary Duties

The primary duties of this position will include the control and monitoring of High Tension Transformer Stations, Distribution Stations and distribution line devices. The preparation and issue of instructions for switching and work protection on the electrical distribution system, the dispatch and monitoring of trouble crews, after-hours customer call response, the programming, inputting and maintenance of outage, SCADA and mapping databases and other work as assigned. You will be required to work twelve-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays, on an as required basis to accommodate scheduled or emergency absences of the regular on-shift Station Operators. When not scheduled to work on a shift, the Spare Station Operator will be scheduled for eight-hour day shifts and will assist on the on-shift Station Operator.

Qualifications

Applications will be considered from candidates who meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Graduate of a two (2) year Engineering Technician Program, with an Electrical option, or equivalent from a recognized Community College
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret drawings, sketches and diagrams and to work from verbal and written instructions, specifications and standards
  • Competent in use of personal computers including knowledge of Microsoft Office, SCADA and Geographical Information Systems (G.I.S.) software
  • Valid Class ‘G’ driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • An excellent health, safety and attendance record
  • Working knowledge of the Utility Work Protection Code and/or previous experience in a Control Room environment would be an asset.
