Step 1: Prepare students for testing
• Tell students they will be speaking into the computer using a microphone.
• You will be listening to their recording and scoring it later.
• They will complete 3 1-minute readings.
• Then they will complete 3 3-minute maze tests. These do not involve recording.
• Using the computer, we can hear where they read well and where we can help them become a better reader. It’s very important that they do their best.
• Reading into the microphone
• Speak in a normal tone of voice. It is not necessary to speak loudly.
• Do not play with the microphone while recording. Your voice will not be heard over the rattling.
• Read at a normal speed, but not so quickly that you cannot be accurate. Go at a comfortable pace that lets you read accurately.
• There will be words you don’t know.
• Try to sound out the word.
• If you can’t, say the word, “skip” and move on.
• After exactly 1 minute, the passage disappears.
• You may not finish. It’s OK.
• Before each test, you will check your sound during a practice passage.
• If you can’t hear your recording, tell your teacher.
• Do NOT go on if the computer is not recording.
• Teachers: Move students to a different computer if the sound is not working.
• During the test, students must work independently.
• Teachers: please no prompting or helping!
