Summer 2017 NDnano Undergraduate Research Fellowship (NURF) Program
For the summer 2017 NURF program, NDnano has compiled several research projects from engineering and science faculty who are affiliated with the Center. The projects offer motivated undergraduates* the opportunity to learn more about a specific area of research, gain valuable skills, and be part of a cutting-edge research project in nanoscience or nanoengineering.
Students awarded a fellowship will conduct their research within an exciting team atmosphere, working with a faculty mentor, postdocs, and graduate students in the University’s science and engineering labs or cleanroom facilities.
Each NURF position is full time (40 hours/week maximum) and provides a total stipend of $5,250 over a 10-week period between May 16 – August 4**. Students awarded a paid fellowship are responsible for securing their own transportation to the University, housing, and food for the summer. The University offers summer housing and meal plans (detailed information is available at http://summersession.nd.edu/student-services-resources/ ), or students can opt to live off campus. For international students accepted into the program, NDnano will assist with the visa process. Fellowship recipients will be part of Notre Dame’s summer research community and have the opportunity to participate in a variety of social and professional development activities. At the conclusion of their research, each NURF recipient is required to prepare a summary of their project accomplishments for posting on the NDnano website.
Please note that since NURF funding comes from a variety of sources, the total number of these competitive fellowships is anticipated to be between 10 and 20. Students who do not secure paid fellowships but are selected as summer interns by faculty could be offered the option of unpaid internship opportunities.

2) Complete the application (next page). Delete this page of instructions, and save the file with your last name and your first name as the first words in the file name. (Ex: Smith-Barb-2017 NURF Application)
3) Email your completed application and current resumé (Ex: Smith-Barb-resumé) to the project’s faculty mentor(s) for consideration, and cc: Heidi Deethardt at . The application deadline is 8:00 am (Eastern) on Mon., February 13, 2017.
Interested NDnano faculty will follow-up with selected applicants directly. Award notifications will begin in early March.
Please note: Students are welcome to apply for more than one project. However, please list and prioritize on your application(s) all the projects for which you have applied.

*For purposes of the NURF program, undergraduates are students who will not yet have completed their undergraduate studies at the start of their summer fellowship.
**Please note: The University allows students to work a maximum of 40 hours/week during the summer months (for all campus positions combined). This means that students cannot participate in the NURF program and at the same time hold any other paid, on-campus, summer position. In addition, fellowship recipients who attend Notre Dame and have 2016-17 on-campus, academic-year jobs may be prohibited from starting their NURF position before the last week of May; contact Heidi Deethardt for more details.
