Fountain solution concentrate contains 0.15 lb/gal VOC, but is diluted at approx 2.5 oz per gal water, resulting in an as-applied VOC content of less than .003 lb/gal (0.15 x 2.5 / (128 + 2.5) = .00287). Blanket and roller wash concentrate contains 543 g/l VOC, but is diluted with 3 to 6 volumes water per volume concentrate, resulting in an as-applied VOC content of 78 to 136 g/l (543/4 = 136, 543/7 = 77.6). It is not known how widely applicable these low-VOC materials may be in the lithographic printing industry. For example, higher-VOC fountain solution may be required in some non-heatset lithographic printing operations, depending on site-specific factors such as product quality requirements and individual press characteristics (e.g., roller materials).
