Job title:Learning Coordinator (STEM) (full time maternity cover from the 1st September 2017)

Grade:Band 3 Point 6 (£18,786)

Term:Funded by the Reece Foundation

Responsible to:Head of Learning and Skills

Responsible for:Staff /volunteers/work placements as allocated.

Key internal relationships:Learning Team,Transport and Industry Team,Heritage Engineer,Events Officers,Community Engagement Team; Collections Team; Engagement Teams, Group and Venue Sales Team, Partnerships & Communications Team Friends of Beamish Museum.

Key external relationships:The Reece Foundation,representatives and educatorsfrom schools and community groups; STEM related agencies from across the Region, Engineering Businesses from across the Region, Museums with STEM related collections.

Purpose:The Learning Co-ordinator (STEM) will use the Museum’s science and industry collections and facilities within the Regional Heritage Engineering Centre (RHEC) to develop and deliver inspiring and engaging learning activities which link with the STEM curriculum and uphold theReece Foundation’s ethos of supporting excellence in engineering education and developing enterprise in the North East. The Learning Co-ordinator (STEM) will also work closely with the Transport and Industry Team and the Events Officers to use Beamish and its collections as a tool to increase participation by schools, young people, families and businessesin STEM related events and festivals at the Museum, and with the Partnerships Team, to develop links with the Business Friends of Beamish with an interest in engineering/ manufacturing.

Duties & responsibilities of the post:

  • Use the Museum and its collections to develop and deliver inspiring and engaging learning activities for schools across the region which meet the needs of teachers and pupils and contributeto improvements in education and engagement with STEM subjects.
  • Help deliver the vision of the Museum’s Business Plan – ‘putting the visitor first’ with an absolute focus on the museum’s audience and a commitment to delivering a world class experience in a living, working Open Air Museum.
  • Work closely with the Assistant Director: Transport and Industry, Keeper of Transport, Head of Industry, Head of Engagement and the Events Officers to use Beamish and its collections as a tool to increase participation by schools, young people, families and businesses in STEM related events and festivals at the Museum.
  • Work closely with the Partnerships Team to forge links with businesses/ external partners with an interest in engineering/ manufacturing, to develop collaborative projects linking schools/ FE colleges/ universities, businesses and the museum which create mutual benefits for all partners and help to create progression routes through to employment in STEM related industries.
  • Work with the Partnerships Team to support raising further funds
  • Work with the Heritage Engineer to develop and deliver hands on STEM learning activity for schools, young people and visitors using the Regional Heritage Engineering Centre at Beamish.

  • Keep up to date with STEM developments in the National Curriculum and develop related learning opportunities which are inspired by the Museum and its collections.
  • Work as part of the Learning Team and contribute effectively to the development and delivery of the HLF funded Remaking Beamish projectto ensure that opportunities for STEM learning are embedded in future developments at the Museum.
  • Prepare STEM learning resource material and assist in advising teachers in the use of the Beamish collections, library and photo archive in liaison with the Collections Team.
  • Encourage close collaboration and good teamwork between all teams and staff/volunteers working to deliver STEM learning activities and events for visitors across the Museum.
  • Work in partnershipwith outside organisations, particularly with engineering businesses across the Region,to help support, research, develop and deliver the STEM learning programme.
  • Monitor and evaluate all STEM learning activities preparing reports as and when required by the Head of Learning and Skills.
  • Ensure that all STEM related learning activity is risk assessed and adequate control measures are in place to manage risk.
  • Be responsible to the Head of Learning and Skills for the management of a budget.
  • Ensure STEM learning programmes meet and where possible exceed performance targets set. This includes an objective to work in partnership with schools to broaden access and engagement with STEM learning using the Museum and its collections.
  • Ensure there is consultation for all STEM learning programmes and activities, communicating work in this area to all internal teams.
  • Ensure quality system and standard operating procedures are in place to facilitate the smooth and timely delivery of STEM learning projects and activities.

General responsibilities

  • Work flexibly to respond to the needs of both the Museum and schools in the region.
  • Be prepared to work outside normal office working hours to meet the needs of schools and to support delivery of the events and festival programme.
  • Ensure compliance with standing orders, financial regulations, audit and management procedures.
  • To carry out duties of the post in accordance with the Museum’s Equal Opportunities Policy, Code of Conduct, and Health and Safety legislation and regulations.

The Learning Co-ordinator (STEM) will from time to time be expected to carry out a range of other duties commensurate with the grade and falling within the scope of the post, as requested by management.

  • A sound working knowledge of the National Curriculum.
  • Ability to think creatively to develop activities, which stimulate learning linked to the STEM curriculum.

  • Degree in STEM related subject
