Sponsors and Volunteers Sought for Trig Star Event

January 23—OrangeCounty engineering firms and others who employ surveyors and mapping technicians are sought as sponsors and volunteers for Trig Star, an event that will introduce local high school and college students to careers in the field. Sponsors, exhibitors, career speakers and judges are needed from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2006.

Hosted by SantiagoCanyonCollege in Orange, Trig Star is a free, fun day of activities for students interested in learning more about careers in surveying. Students will compete for cash and prizes in a trigonometry competition and Survey Challenge. The event also will feature continental breakfast, a barbeque lunch, informational exhibits, and an overview of surveying careers and equipment.

“We want young people to know about the rewarding careers available in surveying and mapping sciences,” said Jeremy Evans, SantiagoCanyonCollege’s Survey/Mapping Sciences program facilitator, who is also the vice president and technical director of surveying for Psomas in Costa Mesa. “Rapid land development in California combined with the impending retirement of many in the surveying workforce will create a huge demand for entry-level employees in the future.”

Trig Star is sponsored by the Orange County Chapter of California Land Surveyors Association and is part of a nation-wide competition of the National Society of Professional Surveyors. The event is facilitated by Vital Link of Orange County. Major sponsors include the California Foundation for Land Surveying Education, Caltrans, Psomas, RBF Consulting and Robert Rien, consultant.
