Dear Families, September 19-23, 2016
Most students remembered to turn in homework on Friday - if you see any papers around your house or in backpacks that haven’t been checked (we mark them with a comment, a sticker or a stamp), please send them back to school for the “class work” bin. That way we are assured work is being recorded. Sometimes students need extra time to complete assignments. If that happens, they will bring it home and there will be a note in planners as to when it’s due. Thank you so much for your support – those spelling tests on Friday were excellent!!!
During this week there will be quite a bit of assessment going on. We are in the midst of reading with each child, and unit 2 in math will be pretested.
In math we will be reviewing the hundred chart, skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s backwards, forwards and practicing quick addition facts.
In Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop we are establishing and using daily rituals and routines to develop good independent and group work habits. Our class has created charts for what Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop time looks like, sounds like, and feels like. Writer’s Workshop we’ll be starting to focus in on building writing capacity and using good writing practices.
Along with academics, the first few weeks of school include reminders and instruction on safety, both physical and emotional. We have completed our first fire drills and talked about lock down drills; the kids knew exactly what to do and how to do it. This is a respectful, organized group, which means we would like to take some field trips this year. Bus safety and online safety have been covered, and Ms. Davies, the school counselor, will be coming in for the next few weeks to teach a unit on social skills to the entire 2nd grade. The Scholastic News is about teamwork and cooperation – if ibises can do it, we can too!.
On Thursday evening from 5 – 6 PM we will be having a very informal 2nd grade information night in the Media Center. All the teachers will be there, walking through a typical 2nd grader’s day, and answering questions from you. We would love to see you, but if you can’t make it, let us know and we will get you up to speed.
And, most importantly, welcome to Emilia, our newest classmate!
