Course Description: Topics such as review of basic arithmetic, Operations with whole numbers,

fractions, decimal numbers, and applications of percent are covered.

Student Learning Outcomes

1- Given a simple expression involving whole numbers, fraction, decimals and/or percents

with or without grouping symbols, students will correctly evaluate the expression without the

use of a calculator.

As assessed by: Collected and graded work.

2- Given a practical problem involving whole numbers, fractions, decimals and /or percents, students will

select and perform the appropriate arithmetic operations(s) to solve the problem and interpret their

result(s).

As assessed by: Collected and graded work.

3- Students will develop success skills and academic behavior including use of class notes

and required text, regular attendance, timeliness, participation in class activities, and

adherence to the College Honor Code and other codes of conduct.

As assessed by: Class records including but not limited to attendance records and homework

records.

Your final grade will be based on the cumulative number of points in this class, plus points

you will receive for your Arrange Time Hours activities.

There are NO extra credit activities for this class.

Grading Scale:

HOMEWORK WILL BE COLLECTED ON THE DAY OF EACH TEST. Homework is

an essential part of the class, so you should do them as completely and as accurately as

possible. +Please use a pencil to do your homework. Homework should be STAPLED,

with your name written on the first page, so they may be easily identified when passed back.

Unstapled homework will be Rejected. LATE HOMEWORK GETS ZERO POINTS.

Test Make up and Calculator Policy:

No calculators are allowed in this class on the tests or final exam.

*THERE WILL BE ABSOLUTELY NO MAKE-UP TESTS OR FINAL.

# Quizzes will be unannounced and each quiz will have 3 questions.

** Arrange Time Hours:

Students can fulfill this requirement by attending faculty and or Supplemental Instruction Workshops, or completing activities from the Aim textbook, that have to be stamped by Math Lab personnel.

Documentations as proofs of workshop attendance will be required. Minimum 16 hours are required.

You can also fulfill Arrange Time Hours by doing online Math Lab resources or a combination of online

and on campus activities mentioned above. Deadline to complete arrange hours is 12/12/2016.

NOTE: Doing homework in the Math Lab or getting tutoring in the Math Lab will no longer

fulfill your Arranged Hours requirement of this course.

Attendance, Drop and Withdrawal Policy:

Withdrawal from class is your responsibility.If you stop attendingclass and do not inform

me of your intention to drop, you risk receiving a failing grade ofF for the course.

ABSENCES DURING THE SEMESTER.

Your grade will be a ‘W’ if you get dropped by the end of the eighth week of the semester,

or an ‘F’ if you get dropped after theeighth week of the semester.

Any emergencies should be reported to me by email immediately.

If you miss a lecture, make sure to check with a classmate about announcements that I normally

make at the beginning of each lecture.

Classroom conduct:

Please try to be punctual in my class. Being late for more than Five minutes is considered a tardy.

Having 2 tardiness is considered an absence. Leaving class before the lecture is over, is considered an

absence, unless prior arrangements have been made with me.

You will be prevented from coming to class for two class meetings and reported to the

College Disciplinarian, if I find you texting, or your phone goes off during class

lecture.

Food or drink is prohibited in the classroom with the exception of bottled water.

Class participation and doing homework are very important in learning mathematics.

Please do your homework as soon as we finish each section.

MATH 81: BASIC ARITHMETIC ( No pre-requisite)

Entry Skills/ Knowledge: No specific entry skills are required although some previousexposure to arithmetic is preferred.

Exit Skills/ knowledge: Student should be able to:

(1)Add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions and decimals.

(2)Use correct mathematical vocabulary to read and write numerical expressions.

(3)Calculate whole number powers of positive rational numbers.

(4)Use order of operations to simplify numerical expressions involving two or more operations.

(5)Reasonably estimate the answer to a numerical problem.

(6)Solve application problems (up to two steps).

(7)Solve ration, proportion and percent problems.

(8)Find prime factorizations of whole numbers.

(9)Find the greatest common factor and least common multiple of two or more whole numbers.

(10)Convert between percent, decimal and fraction notation.

(11)Use inequality symbols to compare two or more positive rational numbers.

(12)Graph positive rational numbers on the number line.
