One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Projects

If you like music…

The Mixed “Tape”

Make a twelve song mixed CD for Nurse Ratched, R.P McMurphy, or Chief Bromden as if they were around today. In letter to your character, explain why you are including each of the twelve songs on the mixed tape. Each song should have a paragraph of in-depth description as to why you think he would like it, using evidence from the themes, symbols, motifs, and situations that the charcters and the novel explored. You must include lyrics and rationale for each song as well as the artist and song title. If you choose to make artwork for your CD, I will count it as extra credit.

If you like the movies…

The Motion Picture

There have been several attempts to bring One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest to the big screen and to the stage. Choose a scene/montage of significant events in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and turn them into screenplay. Please be sure to include Text-Based Evidence (quotes from the novel). You will be required to provide a script that follows movie script format including setting, camera shots, and cast descriptions (who you want to play who). You may work with a partner for this project if you choose to video tape the scene(s) and I will count it as extra credit.

If you like comics…

Comic Book

Choose the most important scenes — in your view — and tell the story of The Hobbit. The quality of your project will be determined by the following: the extent to which your graphic novel includes the key points of the novel, the quality/effort put into the artwork, and the inclusion of an introduction in which you explain what you tried to capture in your recreation of the novel (e.g., "I wanted to emphasize the extent to which McMurphy challenges the nurse’s authority …").

If you like arts & crafts…

Chief Bromden, R.P. McMurphy, or Nurse Ratched’s Scrapbook

Compile a scrapbook of memorabilia that Bilbo or Gandalf might have collected or come across during the novel. All artifacts must be captioned with where he got it, its significance to him, and the page number you found it from in the novel. Think of the images that keep recurring in the novel, the places the characters travel to, and anything they might collect. This project will be assessed based on the amount of memorabilia collected (at least ten items) and the quality/effort put into making the scrapbook.

If you like acting…

Embody Your Character (any character from Cuckoo’s Nest)

Dress in a way that you believe your character would. You should bring in props to help emphasize key points that you want to act out and deliver lines with fluency. Script your lines to capture the ―voice‖ of your character (appropriate phrases, etc.). Essentially, you will need to act like your character. You will have the option to choose a specific scene in the book or create your own scene, as long as you embody your character’s personality.

If you like creative writing…

Chief Bromden or Nurse Ratched: Ten Years Later

Write a piece of short fiction in which you join Chief Bromden or Nurse Ratched’s life ten years after the story ends. You must write in the same style that One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is written in. Use what you know of the characters from the novel along with his state of mind throughout the book to guide your prediction.
