The main factors the companies should consider when choose the long-term develop strategies:
Merger, joint venture, in-house development or trading know-how
The relations among companies are complex, and there are many types. Such as cooperation, competition, coopertition, headquarters and subsidiaries, upstream and downstream relations, know-how trading relations, or just no any relations.
But when one company plans to develop and expand its scale or businesses, what kind of long strategy the company usually choose? Cooperate with other company? Merge other company such as the rivals or the downstream firms? Develop through the way of joint ventures? Or develop the technologies in-house? Or trade the know-how with other companies?
Why different companies choose and implement different long-term strategies? And what are the main factors the companies should consider when choose the long develop strategies to expand the business? The culture, the characteristics of the CEO, or if the technologies of other companies' are necessary for the company? The long-term development planning of the firms? The finance situation of the companies?
Through some examples of the big enterprises in the world , which has chosen one of these strategies, to research the main factors they considered when they chose their long-term strategies, that is to say, why they chose this strategies other than the other one:
The Li & Fung(China)- Merge
The US pharmaceutical industry - In-house technology develop
The US steel minimill-Trade know-how
- Joint venture
-Cooperate with other company
As to the research method, this paper should use the way of interviewing with the CEO of the companies to see the main factors they considered when they chose their long-term strategies. 10 representations of every kind of the long-term strategy should be interviewed, then the main factors they considered will be summarized. And some literatures should be reviewed. ( Some papers about this topic have been found)
Then the conclusion about one company under what circumstances should choose what kind of strategy will be summarized. (어떤 상황에서는 어떤 전략을 선택하는냐 에대해 결론을 내릴 것이다.)

Therefore, I suggest that you complete your literature review and research hypotheses before you move on to the empirical investigation of this topic.

You should look for help in this area as soon as possible.
I would understand that if your research paper at the end of this semester only deals with the theoretical issues. Make sure that you come up with a valid research question based on the thorough literature review before you jump into the empirical (qualitative) investigation.
