Welcome and Introductions

Cheryl Neal started the meeting off by welcoming everyone. She reviewed briefly what we discussed at the last meeting. Mrs. Pool shared a thank you letter from the Martin Elementary counselor thanking the SHAC for their hard work on the Worth the Wait communication plan.

Presentation of Minutes from February 9, 2017

Mrs. Neal asked the members to look over the minutes to see if they had any corrections or questions. No one had any changes or questions. Minutes were accepted.

Wellness Plan Update – Lynn Pool

Mrs. Pool asked if there were questions about the Wellness Plan that was shared with members prior to the meeting. Highlights of the plan were noted. Mrs. Pool asked for further feedback, if any, via email. Ideas that were generated during the Wellness Policy work were integrated into the actual working plan for the 2017-2018 school year.

Character Education Planning – Lynn Pool and Lindsay Fuller

Ms. Fuller and Mrs. Pool shared information about a district wide character education focus for next year. SHAC members gave input on the draft proposal to take back to the counselors in the district who will be fine-tuning the plan for next school year. Input was as follows:

  • Need more detail with each trait
  • Applies to students and adults
  • Unites school as a community
  • Positive – compassion, gratitude, being positive with others (attitude)
  • A Fish Camp before starting 9th grade would be helpful
  • Integrate whichever trait they are learning into PE classes
  • RooPride is caring, loving, etc. instead of using the acronym – making caring common
  • Consider passion; unity (RooPride); Oneness instead of Opportunity; Devoted/Devotion/Determination; Outreach
  • Respect-open minded; Outreach-service to others/community involvement; collaboration-teamwork/dealing with others; perseverance; caring-compassion rather than tolerance; More than just self; to give students ownership; different word than tolerance; responsibility-personal/social/team

Drug Education – Prevention and Intervention – Lynn Pool

SHAC members were divided up into groups to discuss ideas related to drug education. An update was given on the Serenity House Too Good for Drugs Program that was approved earlier in the year. Further input was sought regarding what could be done to help students make better choices. SHAC members were asked to give their thoughts on Random Drug Testing in the form of a plus/delta and also share questions they might have.

Thoughts on drug testing

Plus / Delta
Early intervention / Parent may view as an invasion of privacy
Making a student responsible for their health / Parent backlash
Deterrent from taking drugs / Cost for testing
Incentive to say no / Cost
Opt in option – parent choice / May decrease number of kids who do extracurricular activity
Reduces drug use – deters kids; invokes fear / Invasion of privacy
Prepare for real world / Cost?
Gives kids an out to say no / Civil liberties?
Identifies who needs counseling
Provides the student a way out or a no

Questions:

  1. Why not random test all students, not just extracurricular kids?
  2. What would be the consequences of a positive test?
  3. How would it be funded?
  4. How do they determine who to test? How is it randomized?
  5. Why not test all?
  6. What would the consequences be?
  7. Parent involvement?
  8. What would be the parameters/procedures?
  9. Possible unfair treatment

After discussion, SHAC members voted to explore drug testing more with the understanding that the questions above would need to be answered and more input from community would be necessary prior to making a decision as to whether to implement or not.

Closing Thoughts

Mrs. Pool thanked the committee for their work this year.

Meeting was adjourned at 5:15pm
