ME4054 Creating Google Sites for Each Team
Directions for course TA for setting up a Google Site for Each Team. As of Jan. 2009 there is no way to clone sites so project sites must be set up one by one.
Go to Google Sites and create an account for yourself.
Create a New Site
Click the Create new site button.
New site settings:
Site name (KEYWORD) is keyword for the team / ME4054--KEYWORDURL / me4054keyword
Description / Leave blank
Mature content / Uncheck
Share with / Only people I specify
Theme / More themes > Beige and Blue
Create the site
Edit the New Site
On the left, click the Edit sidebar link. In the sidebar, delete the Recent site activity block. Below the Navigation block, add a Text Box. Title the Text Box “Project Overview”. If desired, below the Text Box, add a Countdown Box, title it Design Show and enter design show date. Save changes.
:
On the home page, More actions > Page Settings. Uncheck Allow attachments and uncheck Allow comments.
On the home page, click Create new page button and create these four pages at the top level
Team (Web Page)
Tasks (List)
Deliverables (File Cabinet)
Documents and Resources (File Cabinet)
For the Task list page, click the Create your own button to create a custom list. Use these column headings: Description, Owner, Deliverable, Due Date (type = Date), Progress, Complete (type = Checkbox)
For all pages: More actions > Page Settings. Check the Show this in Navigation box. Confirm that the four pages appear in the Navigation box at the top left of the home page.
Note: If this gets to be a pain to do 20X (for each project), could let team do it, but it is better to set up a template.)
Share the Site
Site settings > Share this site
Add as owners all other course coordinators and teaching assistants.
Add as collaborators the students on the team and the team advisors.
The distinction between owners and collaborators is important. Only owners can add/remove people from the site.
Uncheck the Anyone in the world may view checkbox. On the example site this remains checked so that all can see the example.
