The George Washington University

Capitol Archaeological Institute

2014 Rogers Excavation and Survey Scholarship Criteria and Application

Introduction

The CAI Rogers Excavation and Survey Scholarships offered through the GWU Capitol Archaeological Institute (CAI) will be awarded to students at The George Washington University who are in need of financial assistance to participate in an archaeological excavation or survey. These scholarships will expand available opportunities for students pursuing studies in archaeology who have the desire or need to participate in archaeological excavations or surveys, regardless of whether or not they have prior experience.

The CAI Rogers Excavation and Survey Scholarship fund will provide up to twenty (20) scholarships of $1,000 each, in two separate categories, with ten (10) scholarships in each category. It will be offered in years that the Warren Fellowship is not available or as a supplement to the Warren Fellowship. In all cases, priority will be given to those applicants participating in a GWU archaeological excavation or survey and to those students who are majoring in archaeology. The first category shall be for those students who will be participating in an excavation or survey for the first time. The second category shall be for those students who have already participated in one or more excavations or surveys previously, but who need financial assistance to participate in another season.

Applicant Requirements and Qualifications:

1.  Applicant must complete and submit: 1) the attached Application Form (see next page); and 2) a CV/Resume (1-2 pages only).

2.  Applicants must be students of the George Washington University applying to an excavation or survey for the upcoming summer.

3.  Applicant must have a 3.0 GPA or higher to be considered for the scholarship.

4.  Applicant must be applying for a George Washington University project, unless GWU is not offering one in that particular field. If there is no relevant project currently offered by GWU, a letter of support from a GWU professor must be submitted on the student’s behalf, stating why the student is not able to participate in a GWU project. Preference in awarding scholarships will go to those applicants participating in a GWU project.

5.  Applicants must be willing, if successful, to write a brief review of their experiences afterward, which may be posted on the CAI’s website, and to attend a lunch in Fall 2014 at which they will give a brief presentation on their summer activities.
