Handwriting Without Tears

Pilot Participation Study – Administrative Packet

Thank you for commitment to participate in the handwriting instruction pilot by Handwriting Without Tears. This pilot process is designed to provide you with necessary instructional materials and professional development tools to yield successful results in student achievement.

DOCUMENTATION MATERIALS

Each pilot participant is responsible for completing and maintaining documentation of the following items located in your HWT Pilot Study - AdministrativePacket. Upon completion of the pilot study, all results will be shared with HWT. The school and HWT representative will work to determine the best way to collect data and share results.

  • Professional Development Log – date(s) of attendance, title(s) of training, name of presenter(s)
  • Assessment Log – listing of administered tests/screeners, date(s) given, scoring results
  • Progress Monitoring Log – include student performance of handwritingbenchmarks every 9 weeks (i.e. – does not meet, meets, exceeds).
  • Daily Instructional Log – include type of instruction given (1:1, small group, whole class), materials used (music, manipulatives, crayon/pencil/paper), duration of instruction, frequency of instruction, lessons used/content (we recommend using the Teaching Guidelines to develop weekly plans), time of day for instruction; you may also submit/use a copy of your lesson plans that would include the above information

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT / INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT

  • All participants must attend the appropriate grade levelHandwriting Without Tears &/or Get Set for School training workshop(s). To ensure training attendance, HWT will waive the course registration fee for the initial workshops only. For any subsequent workshops pilot participants elect to attend, the workshop registration fee will be the sole responsibility of the attendee.
  • Ongoing support will be provided throughout the pilot duration by online resources, staff development/training opportunities, and webinars.
  • The HWT curriculum specialist will be an available resource to provide guidance in material usage and to answer questions, as deemed necessary, by district/school administrator(s).
  • HWT will provide you with state standards curriculum correlations or common core correlations to use in conjunction with your instructional pacing guides and calendars in lesson planning.

PROGRESS MONITORING / DATA COLLECTION

The Screener of Handwriting ProficiencyFor use with the Handwriting Without Tears printing curriculum in grades K-2 and cursive instruction in grades 3-5.

  • We require administering the Screener of Handwriting Proficiency three (3) times during the pilot period - beginning, mid-point, and end of the study. The Screener provides you with online scoring assistance, class and individual student progress reports, and remediation plans for intervention. This data will allow you to monitor efficacy of your handwriting instruction and track the success of your pilot through student performance.
  • To access the Screener of Handwriting Proficiency, please visit:
  • Each user will need to create an online account through HWT for access. Registered account users will receiveautomatic email reminders with open date ranges for the beginning, mid-point, and ending testing periods.
  • Both the established control group(s) and experimental HWT group(s) should be administered the Screener of Handwriting Proficiency to measure and compare results.
  • Additionally, language arts / reading test scores of both control group(s) and experimental group(s) may also be used as supporting data.
  • Comparative groups (control and experimental HWT) should be of similar abilities and academic performance at the start of the pilot.

Get Set for School: Pre-K Assessments – For use with the Get Set for School curriculum in the core areas of Readiness & Writing, Numbers & Math, and Language & Literacy.

  • We require administering the relevant GSS: Pre-K assessment(s)three (3) times during the pilot period – beginning, mid-point, and end of the study. The GSS: Pre-K Assessments provide you with observational checklists to monitor student performance and progress in the core areas outlined above.
  • To access the Get Set for School: Pre-K Assessments, please visit:
  • There should be a control group(s) established with all relevant comparative groups assessed to measure results against a non GSS using class.
  • Other Pre-K developmental checklists may also be used for data collection in both the control group(s) and experimental GSS group(s).
  • Comparative groups (control and experimental GSS) should be of similar abilities and academic performance at the start of the pilot.
