doubles
BY CHARLIE OXLEY
The use of non penalty doubles in today’s bidding systems
are designed to take advantage of the fact that they can be used for other purposes at times when a penalty double would be unlikely.
The most common of these non-penalty doubles is the take out (TO) double, used when your right hand opponent opens the bidding. There are three basic requirements for a TO double, an opening hand, tolerance for the unbid suits and shortness in the opponents suit. Specifically, a double of one of a suit requires 12-18 points with three or more cards in each unbid suit, or any hand with 19+ points. Some players believe support for an unbid minor isn’t necessary but that can be risky, partner will always bid what you don’t have. If you double in the TO position and then bid your own suit you promise 17 plus points
and a good suit.
If your partner makes a takeout double and your right-hand opponent passes you must respond even with zero points. You may bid any unbid four-card or longer suit, usually you will bid your longest suit, giving preference to a major suit if you can. Your response should show strength as well as suit preference, as a guide bid at the cheapest level with 0-9 points, jump with 10-12 and bid game with 13 or more.
Another example is the balancing double, which is basically a takeout double when you are in the pass out seat and the opponents are at a low level contract or when left hand opponents opening bid is passed to you. In this instance you might not have full opening values but should have support for the unbid suits since you are forcing your partner to bid. The lead directing double is a double of a conventional suit bid by the opponents such as a transfer bid, which asks that partner lead the doubled suit.
The above doubles don’t require an alert but there are several other conventional doubles many of which must
be alerted and which require previous agreements with your partner. These include negative doubles, support doubles, responsive doubles, competitive doubles and cooperative doubles to name a few. Discussion of these will have to wait for a future article. Most are only for advanced partnerships but you should learn the negative double since it is quite commonly used, is an effective
bid and is a rather simple bid to learn.

Easy bridge
There will be a new EasyBridge! class beginning Thursday, October 3rd, 2013. The class will begin
at 9:30 a.m. and end at 12:00 noon. If you know of someone who is interested in being introduced to
bridge, this is the class for them! The basics of
bridge are taught in a fun and entertaining way.
The two teachers, Jan Tucker & Gloria Bridges are ready andhoping for a sizeable number of students.
Thanks Jan and Gloria for continuing this program
into its third year.
Our thanks also go to the two teacherswho began
this program - Betsy Becker and Jackie Brasseale.
They both did an outstanding job .We appreciate
your dedication.
Lunch & Learn
The popular mini-lesson of Lunch & Learn will once again be offered before the Wednesday game. It will begin on September 11th at 12:00. A 499er game will follow at 12:30.Join the group and learn some helpful bridge tips!
Game changes
Wednesday afternoon game
Beginning Wednesday, September 4, 2013, the
master point limit for the 12:30 game will be raised
to 499. This will be in effect for a three month trial period. The Board will review this decision at the
end of the three month trial period and decide
whether to make it permanent. The attendance at
the Wednesday game has been decreasing, and
the Board hopes that raising the master point limit
to 499 will help increase table count. Ask your
fellow bridge buddies to return and once again
enjoy a Wednesday afternoon game.
Thursday evening game
As stated in the August newsletter, the game on
Thursday evening (6:30) will become a 299er MP
game. Ask your "old" bridge buddies to come back
and play bridge once again on Thursday evening.
This change will be on a trial basis for one month,
and will be furtherdiscussed at the October Board meeting.
Saturday afternoon game
Beginning Saturday, September 14, 2013, there
will be a 0-20MP game in the education room in addition to the open game in the large playing area. Encourage all novice players to take advantage of
this opportunity to play in a comfortable and less intimidating atmosphere. We hope it will be a fun
time for all 0-20 MP players!
Keys
Thanks, ladies, for returning all the keys to the ladies restroom. It is greatly appreciated.
Pot Luck
Please join us for the monthly pot luck luncheon on
Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 11:30.
Save the date
The Christmas Party is scheduled for Saturday,
December 14, 2013.
In memory
Stan Tillman
Our Club was once again saddened by the passing of
our friendand fellow bridge player, Stan Tillman. It was
very evident that Stan really enjoyed our Club. He was
very helpful in the kitchen (putting out those snacks!),
helping the directors pass out the boards, andhelping
with EasyBridge! among other things. He accepted the
position of Vice President of the Unit and took over as
President when Ron Sievers moved. He was just that
guy who was always willing to help in any way he could.
Thank you, Stan, for all the wonderful memories you left
us! You will be remembered by all of us for a very long
time.
Bill Skidmore
It is with sadness that our Club has lost another member,
Bill Skidmore. Bill passed away on August 21. Bill was
an unassuming and gentle man. He was always
courteous to his partners and opponents. He always
had a ready smile. Reading his obituary, we learned of
the many accomplishments he attained during his
lifetime. We were very fortunate to know Bill and
toshare his love of the game ofbridge. We will miss
you, Bill.
Upcoming Tournament
The unit applied for a 299er sectional. ACBL sanctioned the event. So, we will be hosting this sectional on Saturday and Sunday, November 2 and 3 here in our club room. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up. I know that I have asked a lot of all of you this year. I am hoping you will come through one more time. This will be the end of tournaments until July, 2014. I will need help with registration, hospitality and door prizes. If you donate a door prize, please be sure it is new and something you would want to receive yourself. I will put sign up sheets on the bulletin board in a few weeks. Once again, I am thanking you in advance for supporting this event. These 299er events offer a chance for our lower level players to earn those hard to get silver points right here at home. These events are also profitable for our club because of the low overhead. So, one more time, let’s put on a first rate event.
Thank you,
Jane Gaunt,
Tournament Chairman
