Dear Ware Academy Parents and Students,

I hope you all are enjoying your summer! It’s hard to believe that it is time to start thinking about the upcoming school year! I would like to share a little about myself and then get into the details regarding our fall athletic season.

I most recently taught Health and Physical Education in Williamsburg, at Berkeley Middle School. Before moving to Virginia, I taught elementary physical education in Maryland for eight years. During that time, I received my Masters in Administration and Supervision and organized many before, during, and after school clubs with the help of my parent volunteers. My goal was to get my students to try many different physical activities so they could find at least one they loved! Growing up, I was a competitive gymnast, and when I attended high school I played field hockey and lacrosse. I still enjoy being physically active today with my favorite “sport” being CrossFit. I am excited to get to know all the students here at Ware and to help them become the best student–athlete they can be!

Fall Athletics Information

This fall we will offer four options for our fourth through eighth grade athletes - Co-ed Cross-Country, Co-ed Golf, Co-ed Soccer and Girl's Volleyball. Pre-season practices for all sports will start the week of August 31st and will be held on campus from 4:00 – 5:30pm. Please see below for more specific information on each sport.

This year our fourth along with our fifth graders will have the option to participate in our Athletic programs. Sixth through eighth graders are required to play a fall and spring sport. All students participating in a sport must have a sports physical on file for the 2015 – 2016 school year.

Golf

Golf will be coached by Rodney Taylor. Coach Taylor is a US Navy Corpsman who retired in 2013 afterserving for twenty years. He has been playing golf for over 28 years and currently has an established handicap of 12. Golf will meet Monday, August 31st through Thursday, September 3rd for pre-season here at school from 4:00 – 5:30pm. Golfers must bring their clubs, golf shoes, and a water bottle to practice every day of preseason. During the season the golf team will practice on Wednesdays and Thursdays at Piankatank River Golf Club.

Cross-Country

Cross-Country will be coached by Karla Havens. Cross-country will meet Monday, August 31st – Thursday, September 3rd from 4:00 – 5:30pm. Practice during the season will be held on Monday during physical education so athletes playing other sports can also run cross country. If athletes are choosing to run Cross-country and play another sport, they can let Coach Havens know that they are planning to run, but will then do pre-season with the other sport. Runners should come to practice wearing comfortable running shoes and proper running attire (shirts must be worn at ALL times). Runners should also bring a full water bottle and towel.

Soccer

Soccer will be coached this year by Scott Haley and Scott Rae. Soccer players will practice Monday, August 31st through Thursday, September 3rd from 4:00 – 5:30pm. Soccer players should wear athletic clothing (t-shirt and shorts) and bring with them a pair of soccer cleats, soccer socks, shin guards and a full water bottle. Players must also bring a pair of sneakers for indoor practice, in case of inclement weather.

Volleyball

Volleyball will be coached this year by Ed Gardiner and Chili Childress, Class of 2005. Volleyball players should plan on practicing Monday, August 31st through Thursday, September 3rd from 4:00 – 5:30pm. Players should bring with them a pair of black knee pads, indoor tennis shoes and a full water bottle and wear athletic clothing (t-shirt and shorts/spandex with minimum 3” inseam). If athletes wear spandex, they must be covered by other shorts/pants when outside the gymnasium.

Please mark your calendars for our Parent/Athletic Night, which will be held on September 15th at 6:00pm in the gym.

This is going to be a great year for Ware Athletics, and I am looking forward to meeting everyone during pre-season! If you have any questions or concerns, you can email me at .
