Roosendaal, the Netherlands, March 2018

Dear Prime Minister,

I wish to draw your attention to the trial against Palestinian human rights defender Munther Amira. He was arrested on 27 December 2017 in Bethlehem and is facing charges for peacefully participating in protests. Some of the charges, such as “participating in a march without permit”, are not recognizable criminal offences under international standards. He is also being accused of throwing back a teargas projectile, which had been fired at demonstrators by Israeli forces. However, video footage as well as witnesses, state that Amira was peacefully holding a placard which he used to push the tear gas canister from himself.

I urge you to immediately and unconditionally release Munther Amira as he is being detained and prosecuted solely for peacefully protesting the Israeli occupation.

In addition, I call on you to rescind Military Order 101 and fully respect the right of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank to freedom of expression and peacefully assembly.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.

I am kindly awaiting your reply.

Yours sincerely,
