Newcomer Settlement Program

Scadding Court Community Centre ((through StrategiSense Inc.)

An existing program was expanded to provide opportunities for East African Youth to learn about settlement issues, develop life skills, participate in leadership training and receive individualized support through a mentoring program. Gregory Kim Consulting was hired to develop a Performance Monitoring and Assessment plan to measure how the project is being implemented against the original expectations.

Citizenship Test Preparation Course

Toronto North Local Immigration Partnership

Five agencies in North Toronto (Community MicroSkills Development Centre, North York Community House, Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office, Working Skills Centre andWorking Women Community Centre) have been offering a Citizenship Test Preparation Course to support newcomers to succeed in the federally administered Citizenship Test. Gregory Kim Consulting was hired to refine the program model to support program expansion and evaluation. This work included a collaborative approach to the development of a program model and program logic model.

Evaluation Framework for the On Your Mark Tutoring Program

Working Women Community Centre

On Your Mark tutoring program provides one-on-one and small group support for students of Portuguese and Spanish speaking descent in elementary and high school. Working Women Community Centre hired Gregory Kim Consulting to develop an evaluation framework that included developing a logic model, data collection instruments and working with a team to define and refine evaluation questions and measures.

Evaluation of the Organizational Standards Initiative

Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants

The Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants has a 30-year history of supporting sector, organizational and individual-level capacity in the settlement sector. As part of their work, they engaged Gregory Kim Consulting to conduct a process and outcome evaluation of the Organizational Standards Initiative which helps member organizations assess and meet benchmarks of organizational practices. The evaluation also included coaching to support staff to develop an ‘evaluation mind’ and enhance evaluation activities.

Evaluation of Youth Action to Reduce Drug Use Project

Eva’s Satellite (through StrategiSense Inc.)

The Youth Action to Reduce Drug Use (YARD) Project aims to reduce illicit drug use among street involved and homeless youth through the provision of a comprehensive and collaborative program of health education peer training, recreation, and skills development. Eva’s Satellite engaged StrategiSense Inc to conduct a process and impact evaluation. As part of this work Gregory has been involved in the instrument and protocol development; data collection, data analysis and evaluation support to staff at Eva’s Pheonix to conduct an evaluation.

Collaborative Development of a Program Logic Model

Community Support and Research Unit, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health

The Toronto West End Drop-In Network wanted to design a ‘wet drop-in’ as a harm reduction measure for participants who were at risk of not being able to access services. Gregory participated on a team to help collaboratively develop a program logic model with service users, staff, funders and hospital partners.

OPICAN Cohort Study

Social Prevention Health Policy Research Unit, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health

The OPICAN Cohort Study was a research study examining the behaviours and describing the characteristics of people using illicit opiates but not in treatment. Gregory was part of the research team and was involved in instrument development, data collection and community relations.

Evaluation of the Catalyst Project

Scadding Court Community Centre (through StrategiSense Inc.)

The Catalyst Project aims to reduce juvenile criminal offences through intensive intervention that includes client-centred management, clinical intervention and recreational/life skills programming designed to address multiple risk factors. Scadding Court Community Centre engaged StrategiSense Inc to conduct a process evaluation of the project. As part of this work, Gregory created data entry tracking sheets and created instruments for data collection.

Data Collection for a Study on the Nutritional Vulnerability of Homeless Youth

Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Toronto

Research was being conducted on the nutritional vulnerability and social exclusion among homeless youth. The principal investigator for this project required a qualitative interviewer to conduct in-depth interviews with 20 street involved youth in this Canadian Institutes of Health Research funded study. Gregory was hired to recruit, interview and code the qualitative data.

Evaluation of the...talk

Scadding Court Community Centre (through StrategiSense Inc.)

The...talk is a youth-led, community-based initiative that strives to raise youth awareness, knowledge levels, critical thinking, and build the leadership of youth with respect to drug abuse prevention in the community. As part of this work, Gregory was involved in creating and implementing data collection, storage and analysis protocols. Gregory was also involved in synthesizing the results into statements of the quality of the program.

Developing a logic model for the SmartSAVER Initiative

Omega Foundation (through Nayar Consulting)

SmartSAVER is a creative marketing partnership initiative led by the Omega Foundation to improve low-income students' education opportunities through Registered Education Savings Plans (RESPs). SmartSAVER increases low-income parents' financial and consumer literacy and helps them start and build savings to improve their children's school retention and pursuit of higher education. Nayar Consulting contracted Gregory to help create the logic model and outcome measures for the project.

Evaluation of the Multi-Systemic Therapy Program

Agincourt Community Services Association (through StrategiSense Inc.)

The Multi-Systemic Therapy Program is an intensive family- and community-based treatment that addresses the multiple determinants of serious anti-social behaviour in juvenile offenders. StrategiSense was hired to conduct a process evaluation of the program. As part of the work, Gregory was hired to conduct data analysis.

Evaluation of the Parenting Program

Agincourt Community Services Association (through StrategiSense Inc.)

The Parenting Project was designed to provide support and effective strategies to parents and caregivers living with difficult, defiant or destructive youth to support discovering ways to help the youth make a successful transition to productive adulthood. StrategiSense was hired to conduct an implementation evaluation and Gregory’s role was in data collection and analysis.

Evaluation of the Toronto John School Diversion Project

Social Prevention Health Policy Research Unit, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health

The Toronto John School Diversion Project is a post-charge, pre-trial option for individuals arrested on a communication charge. The research team hired Gregory to conduct semi-structured interviews with participants of the program and assist with the analysis of data from key stakeholders.

Evaluation of the Skills for Learning Integrated with Community Employment (S.L.I.C.E.) Program

Alexandra Park Neighbourhood Learning Centre (through StrategiSense Inc.)

The S.L.I.C.E program is a program for youth ages 18-29 who are out of school and unemployed to assist youth in achieving their overall employment goals. For S.L.I.C.E. Gregory created qualitative interview instruments and protocols; analyzed quantitative survey data and contributed to the writing of the final evaluation report.

Evaluation of Girl Talk

Young Parent Resource Centres (through StrategiSense Inc.)

Girl Talk is a three-year school-based substance abuse prevention project geared towards women 13 to 21 years old who attend section 23 schools located in Young Parent Resource Centres (YPRCs) in Toronto. StrategiSense Inc engaged Gregory to conduct quantitative data analysis.

Trinity Theatre Toronto (through StrategiSense Inc.)

Making Connections: A Social Development Approach to Drug Abuse and Prevention for Suspended and Expelled Students is a program for at-risk youth expelled or suspended from school for drug related charges. The youth, aged 13 to 24, are in specialized programs for expelled students (SPES), alternative programs for long term suspensions, or an in-house suspension program in mainstream schools. StrategiSense was hired to conduct an outcome evaluation of the program. Gregory conducted quantitative pre and post survey data analysis.

Evaluation of Moving Forward

Trinity Theatre Toronto (through StrategiSense Inc.)

Moving Forward Leadership for Life (Moving Forward) is a school based intervention designed by Trinity Theatre Toronto to help expelled students involved in the justice system to reintegrate and participate in their school communities. Using adapted theatre techniques such as role plays, improv and storytelling, Moving Forward is intended to positively influence youth social and emotional development. StrategiSense was hired to conduct an outcome evaluation of the program. Gregory conducted quantitative pre and post survey data analysis on variables of youth resilience.

Action Plan Development

Toronto North Local Immigration Partnership

The Toronto North Local Immigration Partnership (TN LIP) is a community-based planning table seeking to enhance the settlement and employment experiences and outcomes of immigrants in the community. Gregory Kim Consulting and Nayar Consulting were hired to develop a regional-level 3-year action plan to conduct their work. To support the work of the action plan, a communication plan, recommendations for asset mapping and logic model refinement were also provided.

By-Law Review

Mennonite New Life Centre (through Nayar Consulting)

The Mennonite New Life Centre (MNLC) is a community-based settlement agency. In 2011, MNLC embarked on a review of it’s board by-laws and membership. Nayar Consulting contracted Gregory Kim to participate in facilitating focus groups with staff to gather information about the process and to facilitate a working group’s efforts in developing a membership recruitment strategy.

The Alliance for South Asian AIDS Prevention (ASAAP) is a support organization for South Asians infected and affected by HIV. In 2011, ASAAP began a process of strategic planning for the 2012-2015 time period. Gregory was engaged to support the organization develop questionnaires and survey instruments to gather data from key stakeholders.

The Consumer Participation Initiative at the Canadian Mental Health Association strives to increase the active participation of psychiatric consumer/survivors in the organization. Gregory was hired to develop a collaborative process for gathering information and creating a plan for 2011-2014.

The Mennonite New Life Centre is a community based settlement agency. In 2011, they were in the process of renewing and building their board of director’s by-laws. Nayar Consulting was engaged to conduct the by-law review and Gregory was hired to co-facilitate focus groups with staff in this process.

Developing Recovery Oriented Goals

SunPACT Assertive Community Treatment Team, Sunnybrook Hospital

The SunPACT team is a multidisciplinary psychiatric team that assists individuals to live independently in the community. In 2010, the SunPACT team had a team retreat where they hired Gregory Kim Consulting to facilitate a session to name mental health recovery oriented goals for the next year.

Food Quest

Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control, Public Health Agency of Canada

The Public Health Agency of Canada worked collaboratively through the Intervention Research and Knowledge Exchange Unit’s Food Security Initiative to develop a tool called FoodQuest to raise awareness of the multiple linkages between various chronic diseases and food insecurity. The working group for this project realized that accompanying materials needed to be developed to adjunct materials for the tool. Gregory Kim Consulting was hired to explore the purposes, refine an understanding of the audience’s needs and develop adjunct materials for the tool.

The Community Mental Health Common Assessment Project is responsible for implementing the Ontario Common Assessment of Need across the province. In the development of this assessment tool questions were raised about end user’s understanding of privacy rights. Gregory Kim Consulting was engaged to explore the understanding of psychiatric consumer/survivors of the privacy rights and create privacy tools that are easily accessible and understandable by the community.

At Home/Chez Soi Project, Mental Health Commission of Canada

The At Home/Chez Soi project is a Housing First approach to housing individuals with mental health issues. A value of the work is to have the active and meaningful involvement of psychiatric consumer/survivors. Gregory Kim Consulting was hired to present at their annual professional development conference on issues of user involvement and conduct a workshop on the topic.

The Dream Team advocates for more safe, secure and affordable supportive housing for people living with mental health and addiction issues. Gregory Kim Consulting was hired to provide brief support in educating the Dream Team in facilitation skills.

Integrating Peer Support into the Boarding Home Program

Boarding Home Program, COTA Health

COTA Health is a multiservice mental health agency that supports the recovery of individuals through case management, housing and recreational supports. In 2010, COTA Health added peer workers to their services and needed some support in integrating the role into their boarding home program. Gregory Kim was engaged to work with managers to better understand the role and to educate staff members about how people with lived experience can contribute to the team and workplace.

Mood Disorders Association of Ontario

The Mood Disorders Association of Ontario (MDAO) offers support and recovery programs to people living with depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. In 2009, MDAO recognized the need to develop a diversity plan to better serve the diverse communities in Ontario. Gregory Kim Consulting in partnership with Carolina Berinstein Consulting provided supports to MDAO to conduct a SWOT and equity audit as well as developing a framework for equity.

The Hostel Outreach Program provides supports to homeless or under-housed men who are living with serious mental illness. To further their understanding of oppression, the Hostel Outreach Program hired Gregory Kim Consulting to offer a day-long training on oppression, the roots of oppression and approaches to address oppression that are team and individually focused.
