Kathryn Nell Fowler: A Living Obituary

Kathryn Nell Fowler, known as Katie to friends, was born on October 29, 1987 to proud parents, Susan and Tim Fowler. As an only child, she spent a large part of her childhood playing with her beloved dog, Riley who has been a large part of the Fowler family for the past eleven years. The family still resides in Kathryn’s hometown of Alpharetta, Georgia, a northern suburb of Atlanta. In the years since her birth, she has developed from a fun-loving, free-spirited child to a responsible, compassionate and dynamic young woman. Her past three years at Purdue University have been marked by volunteer activities and leadership positions through which she has positively effected and touched the lives of those who were around her.

Above all else, one can say that Kathryn is passionate about life. Kathryn used her passion for Purdue University to promote the culture of campus through such activities as Boiler Gold Rush and Purdue Student Union Board. Through self-discovery, and the help of the Undergraduate Studies Program, Kathryn realized her love for fashion and her business savvy personality. This has lead her to pursue a degree in retail management, with which she hopes to lead to a career in fashion advertising or marketing. She recently obtained a position in Sears Holding Corporation’s summer internship program, recognizing the time and effort she devotes to both her studies and her pursuit of furthering her knowledge of the fashion and retail industry.

In her limited amount of spare time, Kathryn surrounds herself with family and friends. Kathryn and her parents are very close, and family has always been the central support system for all of her successes. In the next ten years, Kathryn would like to settle down and have several children. Kathryn discovered her love for children while working at a daycare center, a job she stated she unexpectedly took two things away from that experience “the importance of leadership for children and a lot about patience.” Presently, she just enjoys spending time with her diverse group of friends. Some of her favorite memories include venturing to concerts with all of her friends and traveling to new locations to explore local cultures.

Kathryn’s efforts for Purdue University and the impact she has made on the lives of those around her transcend her death. Kathryn is an example of a service oriented individual, working to make Purdue a more cultured and friendly community. Friends, family, co-workers, and her peers will look to Kathryn’s legacy as an inspiration to devote themselves to something bigger than themselves.
