INFORMATION ABOUT WINTER SCHOOL
TheUNSWIndigenous WinterSchoolisafullysupervised, five-night residential programdesignedtoprovide Indigenousstudentsinyears10,11and12withanopportunitytoexperienceuniversitylife. Winter SchooliscoordinatedbyNuraGiliIndigenous Programs Unit, which covers all costs of the program.
Duringthe 2018WinterSchool,100studentswill beintroducedtotertiarystudiesinanareaoftheirchoice whilstalsoparticipating inuniversitylifewithfellowIndigenousstudentsfromaroundthecountry. TheWinterSchoolaimstoassiststudentsinidentifying theirpathsofinterest,inturnclarifyingthe subjectareasrequired forfurtherstudyinthatfield.Theprogramwillcombineexpertise from thefaculty,universityandindustryforanall-roundcomprehensiveanduniqueexperience.The UNSW Indigenous Winter Schoolalsoaimstonurturetheleadership,growthanddevelopmentofallparticipantswitha comprehensive,funandengagingprogramofactivities.
Subjectareasofferedfor2018are:BuiltEnvironment (includingArchitecture, Construction),Business,Education,Engineering,IndigenousStudies,Law,Medicine,PerformingArts, Science,SocialWorkandVisualArts.
Who can apply?
AnyAustralianIndigenousstudentwho isinyear 10, 11 or12, who is aspiringtostudy atUNSW Sydneyis eligibletoapplyforWinterSchool.
Previous attendees are welcome tore-apply, however preference is given to those who have not yet participated in the program.
Cost
Theprogramrunsatnocosttothestudent. NuraGiliarrangestravelforstudentsoutsidethe
GreaterSydneyareaandaccommodationisincollegesoncampusforthedurationoftheprogram.

The2018WinterSchoolisfromMonday 9thJulytoSaturday 14thJuly2018inclusive.Theprogram isheldonUNSWKensingtonCampusinSydneyandis coordinatedbyNuraGili,theUniversity’sIndigenousProgramsUnit.
What’s involved?
Theprogramrunsforfivedaysandfivenightsandinvolvesanextensive timetable whichincludes threefullfacultydaysinthespecificsubjectarea,aswellasacademic sessions,culturalactivities, excursionsandnightactivities. All students who attend Winter School are expected to fully participate in all activities set down in the program. This will involve group presentations, team activities and possibly public speaking.
Thedaysarecompletelyfullandassuch,studentsareexpectedto beupat6.30amandbackintheirroomswithlightsout,at10pmeachnight. Studentsovertheageof18 must comply withtherules set down for all other students who are not yet 18. WhilstNuraGili acknowledgesthelegalageofsuchstudents,forthepurposeoftheprogram,therecanonlybeone set ofrules for everyone,asall staffinvolved in the program mustmaintainaconsistentdutyofcaretoeachindividual attending.
