- What part of the body is the integumentary system?
/ The integumentary system is the organ system that protects the body from various kinds of damage, such as loss of water or abrasion from outside. The system comprises the skin and its appendages (including hair, and nails).
- What is the epidermis?
/ The epidermis is the outermost layer of our skin. Its primary function is to protect our bodies and provide an effective barrier from the outside world
- What is the dermis?
/ The thick layer of living tissue below the epidermis that forms the true skin, containing blood capillaries, nerve endings, sweat glands, hair follicles, and other structures.
- What is melanin?
/ The pigment that gives human skin, hair, and eyes their color. The more melanin, the darker the complexion.
- What is the sebaceous gland?
/ A small gland in the skin which secretes a lubricating oily matter (sebum) into the hair follicles to lubricate the skin and hair.
- What is sebum?
/ An oily substance secreted by the sebaceous glands in mammalian skin. Its main purpose is to make the skin and hair waterproof and to protect them from drying out.
- What are sweat glands?
/ A small gland that secretes sweat, situated in the dermis of the skin. Sweat comes out of a small opening called the pore.
- Name 2 functions of the skin.
/ The skin has three main functions: protection from the outside world, regulation of body temperature, and sensation.
- Name the 3 layers of the skin.
/ Epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis.
