English language training for youth workers

Participants: youth workers from the Czech Republic and Slovakia

Aims of the training

  • Improvement of communication skills in English needed to organise international youth projects, especially EVS
  • Motivation of participants to organise projects under the YOUTH programme
  • Start networking among participants

Participants profile

  • youth workers or young people motivated to organise international projects but who lack sufficient communication skills (or confidence) in English
  • at least pre-intermediate level of English necessary

Working methods

English and partly also computer skills are understood not as the aim of the course, but as the means for successful running of international projects.

The focus will be on active participation, experiential learning, learning by doing and workshops. Working language will be only English.

Content of the course:

During the course, the participants will gain practical skills and learn how to:

  • present their job and the activities of their organisation
  • create awebsite of their organisation, group or activity in English
  • find a possible volunteer or hosting place
  • run effective and comprehensive e-mail and telephone communication between the volunteer, host and sending organisation
  • manage the EVS project – HEI information, application form details
  • communicate with the volunteer (info before arrival, shortly after arrival, orientation in town, giving instructions, practicalities for the volunteer – accommodation, food, pocket money, insurance, at the doctor’s, time schedule, working activities of the volunteer, leisure time, contact with other volunteers and with the local community)
  • work in an international team with the volunteer
  • distinguish the role of the volunteer in their organisation
  • deal with conflicts during EVS

The participants will gain theoretical knowledge in these areas:

  • the Youth Programme – Why? Who? How?
  • Youth in Action 2007-2013
  • Rights and responsibilities of an EVS volunteer and EVS host and sending organisation

Costs & Participation fee

Sending costs (travel costs, insurance) covered by participants

Hosting costs (accommodation, food, programme activities, local transport) covered by Czech National Agency

Participation fee - 1200 SKK - used for purchasing textbooks, dictionaries, and other learning materials etc.

Timetable

The training starts at 4:00 on Monday 4th September 2006, please arrange your travel so that you can arrive at the accommodation place before this time.

The training finishes at lunchtime on 14th September 2006.

Things to bring

Please bring with you comfortable informal clothes, outdoor shoes (for sports activities and light trekking), raincoat, materials needed if you would like to run a short workshop or energiser and information materials (leaflets, CDs, pictures..) about your organisation.

To get to Penzión Médea, please get off at the main train station in Čadca, turn left, cross the big traffic lights, walk over the bridge and then straight on till the end of the road.

Note: Fast trains only stop at the main station, but if you are travelling by bus, or a slow train, don’t get off at the stop Čadca-mesto, but at the main station Čadca-hlavná stanica.

Meals will be provided in Penzión Médea. If you wish to have vegetarian meals or have other dietary needs, please write to: if you haven’t noted it in your application form.
