Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) is the only hospital system in Ontario providing specialty care to people throughout the entire life cycle, from pre-birth to old age. HHS serves the densely populated south central region of Ontario and is also a referral center for patients from elsewhere in the province. HHS consists of six hospital sites and six specialized healthcare facilities which makes it one of the largest hospital-based workforces in Ontario.

Learners participating in the CPE Unit at HHS will be placed at either Hamilton General Hospital and Regional Rehabilitation Center, the Juravinski Hospital, or St. Peter’s Hospital. Each of these sites will provide a rich learning opportunity to acquire skills in spiritual care assessment and intervention.

What is CPE?

CPE education is an integrated practical and theoretical process where learners gain experience and skills in providing meaningful Spiritual Care through qualified supervision and a facilitated peer group process. These educational units and run through the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care and Counselling which is a multifaith organization, committed to the professional development, certification and support of people involved in spiritual care, psycho-spiritual therapy, education and research.

What will learning focuses on?

  • Developing skills in spiritual care assessment, intervention and evaluation of effectiveness
  • Strengthening learners self-awareness
  • Reflective consideration of visits through reports, role playing, seminars and discussion with peers and supervisor
  • Opportunity to acquire relevant theoretical information (ex. Grief & loss, diversity & cultural sensitivity, shadow realities and projections, reflective listening and low impact debriefing, to name a few) through didactics, seminars and/or reading

Who can apply?

  • Anyone interested in personal growth and institutional chaplaincy in areas such as healthcare, corrections, education, community, hospice, etc.
  • students pursuing field education experience in spiritual care, theology, or counselling
  • healthcare professional committed to the spiritual aspect of health
  • clergy member or a lay people seeking professional development

What does an extended CPE unit at HHS involve?

  • 200 hours of clinical experience at one of three HHS Sites (Hamilton General Hospital, Juravinski Hospital or St. Peter’s Hospital)
  • 200 hours of didactic learning, peer- engagement and individual supervision
  • Didactic learning will occurThursdays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Clinical Day of student's choosing in consultation with supervisor 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM or 2 half days
  • After the midpoint of the unit, learners will participate in the evening on-call rotation
