Unusual Schools

Theatre School

At theatre schools the school week is in two parts. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday pupils have classes in normal academic subject like maths and science. On Thursday and Friday they study music, dance and drama. Students must audition to get a place at theatre school. They must sing, dance and read a speech.

Boarding School

More young people are going to boarding school. Some people think this is because the Harry Potter books and films make boarding school look cool. Others say it is because parents are worried about keeping their children save. The advantages of boarding school are that your friends, clubs and sport are always there and that you learn to be independent. The disadvantages are that you spend less time with your family. Four out of ten kids at boarding school don’t even see their parents every week.

Democratic School

At Summerhill school in Suffolk pupils don’t have to go to lessons and there are no reports to parents to worry about. They don’t have to take tests or exams unless they want to but most of the students get good exam results. There are meetings every week in which each person has one vote. There are 230 laws at Summerhill made by students and the people who work there. If a Summerhill pupil upsets others, everyone talks about the problem at the meeting. Some Summerhill punishments: no TV or computer use for 2 days or standing at the back of the lunch queue.

Integrated School

If education is a preparation for life, schools should have a mix of people in them. This is the view of integrated schools. Wheelchair athlete Tanni Grey Thompson, who has won several gold medals for Britain at the Paralympics, agrees with this. She went to a school where there was a mix of students who were able-bodied and students who had physical disabilities. “My parents were determined for me to have a normal education and not give up learning. Also it was good for the able-bodied kids to understand that our legs might not work but our brains do. I know some people have never even spoken to a person in a wheelchair in their lives.”

School at home

Is a school always the best place for education? The parents of 850,000 schoolchildren in the USA say no. These kids are taught at home by their parents in Homeschooling programmes. Their parents don’t trust schools to «teach the right stuff». Others are worried about safety. Since school shootings in the past few years, the number of teens being educated at home has risen by 30 percent.

I want to swim in the sea and visit some historical places. What do you usually do during your summer holidays?

Write me soon.
