EDCF Technical Module

Wednesday 1 February 2006

10.00 a.m. - 1.00 p.m.

The early adopters guide seems a long time ago as was IBC. The Early Adopters Guide was received very well so thanks again for all your hard work.

1.  Introductions

There were several outstanding issues from IBC

·  Variable Frame Rates for Digital Cinema Distribution. Still awaiting report to pass to SMPTE with corroboration from European DOP’s. Kommer Klein to report.

·  Subtitle Positioning – Kommer Kleim to report

·  Formation of an archiving topic group. A lot of interest in this one, still looking for a chair

·  Formation of a training topic group – Angelo D’Alessio

2. New Work

Now that the DCI requirements specification is in the public domain and heading for standardisation in SMPTE, I feel it is time to put more detail into the EDCF four levels of service. Levels 1 and 2 can be mapped from ongoing work in SMPTE and levels 3 and 4 can be mapped to existing standards in both SMPTE and ITU.

·  HD/DC Interoperability
A new European High Definition Forum has been inaugurated under the banner of the EU Digital Interoperability Forum and the EBU. After discussion with David Wood of the EBU I would like to suggest an information exchange between the EDCF-T and the EHDF Membership. The purpose of this would be to find the optimum way to interoperate between levels two, three and four so facilitating access to Digital Cinema’s from Live Television and Independent Digital Production.

·  DCI and Other Film Formats
Peter Swinson has put together a discussion document on the implementation of commonly used aspect ratio's inside the DCI Containers.

3. Looking for Volunteers, posts to be filled:

·  Mastering Topic Chair

·  Archive Topic Chair

·  Compression Topic Chair

4. Report on French ISA Interoperability Programme - Matthieu Sintas CST

5. Any Other Business
