Overview of Fisher House™ Program
A Fisher House™ is "a home away from home" for families and caregivers of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. The homes are normally located within walking distance of the treatment facility or have transportation available.There are55 Fisher Houses locatedon military installations and VA medical centers. Currently, there are 21 VA Fisher Houses are located at: VA Medical Centers in Albany, New York; Augusta, Georgia; Bay Pines, Florida; Boston, Massachusetts; Chicago, Illinois; Cincinnati, Ohio; Dallas, Texas; Denver, Colorado; Houston, Texas; Los Angeles, California; Miami, Florida; Minneapolis, Minnesota(2 houses); Palo Alto, California; Richmond, Virginia; Salt lake City, Utah; Seattle, Washington; St. Louis, Missouri; Tampa, Florida: Washington DC; and West Palm Beach, Florida.
New Fisher House construction is underway at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (University Drive Division) Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Future construction is planned for San Antonio, Texas; Tennessee VA Medical Center, Murfreesboro, Tennessee Valley; and Gainesville, Florida. The VA Fisher House Program plans to expand to 38 Fisher Houses over the next several years.

In May 2002, the Under Secretary for Health appointed the Director of Social Work, to oversee the VA Fisher House Program and to serve as the VA liaison to the Fisher House Foundation.
