SUMMARY OF MAIN FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE OF JOB
The medical physicist is the technical lead and recognized expert for Medical Physicists duties. Adherence to compliance with radiation control, setting standards and protocols in accordance with best practices and meeting legal standards and requirements. The medical physicist will be expected to work closely with the Head of Radiographer to ensure a seamless process within the department.
LIST OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The medical physicist will perform scheduled quality assurance tests.
  • Generate subsequent reports of quality tests.
  • Ensure quality and regulatory compliance requirements are met.
  • Assist with patient dose calculations.
  • Perform investigations and provide recommendations for corrective actions for radiation related incident.
  • Assure all exposures to radiation are as low as possible (ALARA).
  • Assist the Chief radiographer in optimising MRI and CT protocols.
  • Adhere and ensure compliance with radiation control board, Hazardous Substance Act, HPCSA and all other relevant legislations.
  • Ensure the commissioning and acceptance tests on new equipment to ensure that the equipment purchased complies with clinical and technical performance specifications.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Requirements of the role
  • A BSc degree with Physics as a major subject.Masters degree in Medical Physics.
  • BSc (Hons) in Medical Physics is preferred
  • Current registration with HPCSA as a medical physicist.
  • A minimum of 3years’ experience as a medical physicist after registration with HPCSA.
  • A minimum of 2 year experience as a medical physicist in a radiology departments

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, TRAINING AND COMPETENCIES REQUIRED
  • Knowledge and interest in the practical application of science to medicine.
  • Ability to work accurately and methodically.
  • Commitment to continuing personal professional development.
  • Ensure good communication and team work in the Radiology department.
  • Relevant technological and computer literate.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills are necessary.
