CENTENNIAL JR. HIGH - BAND GRADING OUTLINE

If you have any questions, Mr. Park’s school phone number is 801-402-5555 ext. 50130. His e-mail address is: and his cell phone no is 801-725-3577.

This outline and disclosure statement should clarify grading policies and guidelines for all band classes. The grade is divided into four categories:

1. Classroom participation and citizenship – 20%

2. Performance grade – 35%

3. Playing tests – 20%

4. Practice cards – 25%

Each category is described below:

1. Classroom participation: Each student starts with 100 points in this category. Points are deducted for the following:

Ø  No instrument or music -10 points after 1st time

Ø  Not putting things away after class -5 points after 1st time

2. Performance grade: Each student starts out with 100 points in this category. Points are deducted for the following:

Ø  Tardy to any performance One letter grade drop

Ø  Unexcused absence from performance D grade for 1 absence, F for 2nd

absence

3. Playing Tests: Each student can earn up to 100 points for each playing test. Points are based on

how well prepared the student is when they do their playing test.

Failure to take a playing test will result in the forfeiture of the 100 points for that test.

No make-ups will be allowed after the end of the quarter.

4. Practice Cards: Beginning Band students are expected to practice 20 minutes each day, five days per week. Intermediate and Advanced Band students are expected to practice a minimum of 2½ hours per week divided into five 30 minute practice sessions.

Practice cards are provided to track practice time. Cards are to be signed by a parent

and turned in each week on Monday. (See sample practice card below)

CONCERTS, FESTIVALS AND OTHER PERFORMANCES

All students are expected to perform at any concert which involves their group. Illness, or a marriage or death in the immediate family are the only excuses for missing a performance that will be accepted. Birthdays, church activities, employment, or homework are not valid excuses. NO ONE WILL BE EXCUSED FROM A CONCERT AFTER THE FACT. Any absence from a performance for any reason must be cleared with Mr. Park beforehand by the student’s parent or guardian. Most performances are scheduled weeks in advance, providing plenty of time to resolve potential conflicts. (Please the PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE below.)

Please check your calendar now for any potential conflicts. Sometimes when a student is absent, their part needs to be re-assigned. We need enough time for the student to learn the new part.

PRIVATE LESSONS
We highly recommend that students take private lessons from an instructor on their instrument. While
private lessons are not required, students who take them have a clear advantage over those who don't.
It is very beneficial to have individual guidance on a weekly basis that is tailored to the needs of the
student. Below is a list of recommended teachers for each instrument. If you know of someone whose
name should be added to this list, please let Mr. Park know.
