For8 weeks, the tuition is 5000元, plus 20元 for your campus card.

Please note, if due to the spread of students at different proficiency levels, there are any very small classes, or students need one-to-one or tuition or extra courses, SNNU would have to charge these at a different rate.

Explanatory notes

Note to Questions 1 – 9

These details will be passed on to SNNU and will be used by them to raise the paperwork and letter of invitation required to process an X2 student visa application. Please note you can’t apply for the visa without this letter and form.

Note to Questions 8, and 15-18

If you successfully complete a 4 week course of study at SNNU, you can earn 6 credit points towards your UNE degree or diploma, and 8 weeks can count for 12 credit points. This is conditional on the regulations of your particular degree or diploma allowing it – it is your responsibility to check this by consulting your degree rules on the Course and Unit Catalogue and/or asking for advice through AskUNE. The procedure for enrolling and applying for credit is detailed below.

Note that this short intensive course does not replace any of the other core UNE Chinese units, but is additional to them.

1.  4-week course. You should enrol online in the unit ICLU300 for Trimester 3 2017. The School of Arts at UNE will pay the student HECS contribution for anyone enrolling in ICLU300. After you finish the 4 week course, your assessment transcript (including exam marks) from SNNU will be required as proof of successful completion in order to confirm your UNE credit. After your results from SNNU have been received in the School of Arts and ratified, they will be forwarded to the Student Centre and the equivalent UNE mark and grade will appear on your transcript.

2.  8-week course. You should enrol online in the unit ICLU300 for Trimester 3 2017 to cover the first 4 weeks of study (as above). Your second 4 weeks of study will need to be undertaken via “Permission to Enrol Elsewhere” (PTEE). For PTEE for this short course, you should not apply directly to the Student Centre. Instead the information about PTEE that you supply on this registration form will be collated in the School of Arts and then forwarded to the UNE Student Centre for processing as a batch. At the end of the 8 weeks, after your results from SNNU have been received in the School of Arts and ratified, they will appear as follows: ICLU300 – 6 credit points; PTEE - “unspecified credit in Chinese at xxx level” – 6 credit points. HECS is not payable on PTEE.

If you wish to take the 8 week course but only have room in your diploma program for one 6 credit point unit, you can take the 8 weeks and simply claim credit for 4 weeks. Similarly, if you wish to join the group and take the 4 week course but cannot count it for credit in your UNE program, that’s also acceptable.

Note to Questions 19 & 20

Accommodation on campus will probably be in the QiXiaYuan Centre, a facility which provides accommodation specifically for conferences and overseas visitors. The rooms are like a standard 3-star hotel room with heating, TV, wired internet access and ensuite. The cost is 180元 per night for sole occupancy, or 90元 per person twin share. For those on a very tight budget, it may be possible to request a room in a different building nearby at a slightly lower standard for 160元per night or 80元twin share. (Contact Isabel to discuss).

Note to Question 21 & 22: planning your arrival in Xi’an

Xi’an Xianyang Airport is some way from SNNU and for a reasonable charge the university can arrange airport pickup and take you directly to your accommodation, which I recommend. Past participants have found it easier to arrive in pairs or small groups. So consider organising to travel together. I strongly advise you to avoid the flights which only arrive in Xi’an at around midnight. Consider another routing such as the Sydney – Guangzhou – Xi’an route with China Southern instead, which gets to Xi’an in the daytime and ensures a smoother arrival at SNNU.

Insurance

All participants must have effective travel and medical insurance cover. If you are doing the short course for UNE credit you might be eligible for free cover under UNE’s travel and medical insurance. Once your registration is confirmed, you should contact Joy Kirby for assistance with this.

You are advised to take all reasonable precautions about personal safety and looking after your money and personal belongings while travelling. Be aware of the presence of pickpockets in busy places in China and keep your valuables safely at all times.

Health

It’s each student’s responsibility to visit their doctor early before departure to arrange all required vaccinations etc.

DECLARATION:

“I undertake to arrange full travel and medical insurance to cover me on this study tour to China, and to consult a doctor about vaccinations before I leave Australia.”
