LSBE STUDY

ABROAD POLICIES

Labovitz School of Business and Economics (LSBE) students are encouraged to spend at least part of their college experience studying abroad. The advantages to students are many and varied, including learning about other cultures, strengthening language skills, and creating lifetime connections with students from other countries. This experience should also help prepare students for the global aspects of the contemporary business world.

While LSBE encourages study abroad, students should be aware of the policies related to the B.Acc., B.B.A, and B.A. degrees described below. Begin working with LSBE Advising Office staffbefore you make a commitment to any institution abroad to ensure that your plans are consistent with these policies.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Fifty percent (50%) of all required business credits (including the upper-division economics elective) must be taken from LSBE faculty
  • 20 of the last 30 credits must be completed while enrolled as an LSBE student
  • Students must complete a minimum of 30 credits while enrolled in LSBE
  • No more than 9 credits (3 courses) pertaining to a specific major may be taken abroad, unless an exception is approved by petition
  • If a business course taken abroad is worth more credits than one in LSBE, the extra credits may not be counted toward total degree credits; that is, no other requirements can be reduced by those extra credits
  • Courses from abroad which are proposed to replace required LSBE core or major courses must be reviewed and approved through the proper LSBE process, a process which is coordinated between the LSBE Advising office and appropriate department heads. A class syllabus that provides information on tests and course topics is required. A summary report of study abroad courses is then submitted to the dean for review and final approval to ensure compliance with AACSB International accreditation
  • Study abroad at an AACSB International accredited school may ease the transferring of credits. However, students must still complete 50% of required business classes from LSBE faculty and the number of courses related per major is limited to three
  • Students requesting upper-division courses abroad similar to those that require admission to candidacy status must be admitted LSBE candidates. If a valid circumstance exists to request an exception to this, a petition must be filed and approved by the appropriate parties
  • Non-LSBE students planning to take LSBE courses abroad must have courses approved and be formally admitted to the minor if pursuing upper-division courses.

This policy was developed to ensure that students have an enjoyable and meaningful study abroad experience while also receiving an education that meets the standards established by LSBE. For students planning to take some business courses in the study abroad program, it is usually desirable to take a mix of core or major courses with non-LSBE electives. If you are planning a study abroad experience that does not meet these specifications, please consult with your faculty advisor and with LSBE Advising Office to explore alternatives.

Many study abroad programs require (or allow) for a student to be registered through UMD for FST credits. Such credits are considered resident credits. Contact the International Education Office in 138 Kirby Plaza.
