Course Overview

The History of Warfare course will maintain a focus on the development of armies and tactics, as well as the major impacts such conflicts had on state building. We will address the various social, cultural, economic, and political impacts warfare would have throughout world history. This course will visit various groups, people, battles, etc in context to warfare and nation building through the world spanning history from early Mesopotamia to modern global conflicts of the present era.

There is no required text for the course however various other methods and supplemental materials may be implemented at any point. Always be prepared for lecture and notes for areas of class as well as daily assignments and/or projects to be assigned.

Be sure you have some point of access to a computer for any postings and/or announcements on my teacher webpage. Remember, there are computer labs/libraries at your disposal to check quickly for any assignments pertaining to class, so make time not excuses! See link below:

NTI- We make use of non-traditional instruction in lieu of inclement weather. If any conditions impact school closings be sure to check webpage for daily NTI work for the course.

Resources and Materials:

All students are expected to be prepared when coming to class: The following should be brought to class everyday:

  • Pencil/Pen
  • 3 Ring Binder specifically for this class
  • Good Attitude

-Classroom Procedures and Policies will reflect school rules and codes of conduct

-We will use various types of technology in class. For this reason, smartphones, netbooks, etc. are both permitted and encouraged for CLASS ACTIVITIES. YOU WILL NOT HAVE PHONES OUT IN CLASS UNLESS YOU ARE INSTRUCTED TO DO SO.

-Late work is HIGHLY discouraged. You have three days from the due date to receive partial credit, longer than that may receive very little or no credit at all depending on lateness of the assignment. You may receive a “T” in Infinite Campus showing the assignment turned in, going to retake eligibility but it calculates no credit toward your overall score/grade.

Vocabulary Requirement

For each chapter, students are expected to complete the assigned vocabulary. The vocabulary assignments will be given on the class schedule as well as being assigned by the instructor. Students are expected to keep all vocabulary in a VOCABULARY section in the required notebook. All vocabulary should be HAND-WRITTEN. Typed vocabulary will not be accepted (no “copy and pasting between students”).

Quiz Grading

Quizzes will consist of multiple choice questions based on the assigned readings and vocabulary from each chapter. Students can expect a quiz per week. Students will be allowed to use vocabulary on quizzes.

Exam Grading

Unit Exams will be assigned according to the class schedule provided. They will consist of multiple choice questions and Open Response questions for a total of 100 Points. Exams will include prior unit information starting with EXAM 2. This means that subsequent exams after Exam 2 will include questions from the previous units, although a majority of the questions will be from the unit being assessed.

SBG and Exam Retakes

Standards based (see scale via WJHS handbook and/or my classroom) and retakes are utilized in this course. You have one retake per exam taken (none on projects or final exam) and in order to be eligible you must have all work turned in to me which I will update in Infinite Campus.
