Fighting global poverty and climate change one tree at a time

Our Vision

The goal of Trees for Life is to make use of technology that has huge potential for poverty alleviation in countries where deforestation has pushed the ecosystem to the brink of destruction. The idea is to introduce electric augers into poverty stricken and natural resources deprived areas that are trying to push for large-scale reforestation. Through our advanced yet easy to use design, we can help provide inexpensive means of reforesting large areas that have been devastated by human activity, and make the monumental task of planting hundreds of millions of trees possible via it’s effectiveness and potentially wide availability.

Motivation

Forests are not an infinite resource.

Current reforestation efforts are inefficient and labor intensive.

reforestation can be used to alleviate poverty in third world countries.

The Device

Our device consists of an auger bit, motor, and battery assembled around a handlebar, shaft, and three legs for support as illustrated in the figure. This device runs on twelve-volt rechargeable batteries that use solar cells to recharge. This allows the user to have access to power anywhere that the sun is shining. In addition, because we provide several batteries, one battery can be charging while another is in use. The device can also be used to drill holes of different depths for different projects on varying terrain. The versatility and the relative ease by which this product can be used will be instrumental in its success and adoption amongst people.

Challenges

While completing this project there were several problems that we meet. this issues included:

1) Mounting the electric motor to the auger itself.

2) Burning of available 1 amp H-bridges due to high current ussage of the electric motor.

3) High tolerance fitting of gearbox to electric motor

4) Financing the project.
