PMW 203 -- Concert Choir

Course Description

A mixed choir with membership open to sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students by audition with literature and performances varying from year to year to include the following types of experiences: seasonal concerts, conferences, major choral works, musicals, and a spring tour.

Prerequisite: Audition and approval of director

Rationale

This course is important to the overall development of the musician. It allows the student to learn better musicianship through sight-reading, ear-training, and basic vocal development. The student also learns to work with others to create a unified sound and individually learns to how to be more expressive in their delivery of the text and music.

Instructional Objectives

The student who satisfactorily completes this course should be able to:

1.Sing on pitch, blending his/her voice quality with others in the same section giving attention to the balance of the entire choir.

2.Demonstrate proper breathing, tone production and support, formation of vowels, and articulation of consonants through good choral singing.

3.Show an understanding of good ensemble by considering dynamics, tempos, attacks, releases, and phrasing.

4.Show good stewardship of time during rehearsals and in preparation for rehearsals.

5.Demonstrate proper musical, social, and spiritual attitudes, which create a successful college choir.

6.Show an understanding that choral participation is not just a performance, but also an excellent opportunity for ministry.

Course Procedures

1.Regular rehearsals are held Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each week from 12:00 - 12:50 p.m. The need for additional rehearsals will be left solely up to the director. You are also expected to attend each and every scheduled rehearsal outside of the class hours. I have given you ALL dates. It is your responsibility to communicate any conflicts with your work, other classes, etc. There is NO excuse for not being able to make it to additional rehearsals.

  1. A music folder will be assigned to each member of the choir. The choir librarian will keep track of the music given and collected. You will be charged for lost music. You are expected to bring your music and a pencil to every rehearsal.
  1. The school-wide attendance policy that will be strictly adhered to in this class. You are allowed six absences to be used for illness or emergencies. Please refer to the Student Handbook for further details of the exact policy.

4.All performances are MANDATORY. Please do not ask to be excused from a performance. Missing a performance could result in being dropped from the course with a failing grade.

5.Music ensemble members must pay for a portion of the cost of their outfits. For women, the approximate cost is $85.00 and the cost for hemming is your responsibility. For men,the approximate cost is $150 (includes tuxedo, shirt, tie, vest, and alterations). Both men and women are required to have a pair of black dress shoes (the women's must be closed-toe heels). Men must wear black socks. Concert Choir members will also purchase an informal shirt for spring tour. The shirt is included as part of your Choir Fee on your school bill which includes the tour shirt and retreat costs.

Once orders have been placed with the vendors, the outfits are non-returnable. CCU will not subsidize outfits for students who drop the class.

6.The following are not permitted in rehearsal: wearing caps, or immodest clothing; food or gum, cell phones must be in vibrate mode and will not be answered during class.

Grading Policy and Procedures

1.Attendance = 60%

Every rehearsal and performance is important. To work and sing together as an ensemble we need everyone to give 100% in attendance. This portion of your grade will be determined by your absences. Absences for all rehearsals will be calculated as follows:

A = 0-2

B = 3-4

C = 5

D = 6

F = 7 or more and dropped from the class

REMEMBER: All performances are MANDATORY. Missing a performance could result in being dropped from the course with a failing grade. As the professor, I reserve the right to decide whether a student will be dropped from the class or assigned another consequence such as a significant reduction in the final grade. This is solely up to my discretion.

2.Musical Contribution and Rehearsal Participation = 40%

Factors to be considered:

a.Ability to sing your part
