Purpose

In this inquiry, students learn about the benefits and risks associated with the application of biotechnology and genetic engineering to create genetically-modified foods.

Estimated Time to Complete

One class period

Objectives

·  Demonstrate understanding of one of the major societal applications of biotechnology and genetic engineering

·  Identify the benefits and risks associated with the application of biotechnology for food production

·  Write a position paper

Assessment

The Respond sheet requires students to list the pros and cons of modifying foods genetically. Students use these facts to support a position for or against genetically modified foods. The teacher collects and evaluates the Respond sheet and written letters. Letters can take a pro, or con, position, but should be persuasive and provide evidence to support a thesis statement. Subsequent class discussion gives students the opportunity to discuss the food supply and their views regarding its modification.

Genetically Modified Foods: Pros & Cons
Pros / Cons

3.  (Homework) Using your list of pro and cons, write a letter to an elected representative in which you discuss the ethical implications of humans' ability to change and manipulate DNA.

In the introductory paragraph, state your opinion regarding the risks and benefits, to humans and other organisms, resulting from the production, growth, and consumption of genetically modified foods. In the remaining paragraphs, use three examples from your research to support your opinion. Finally, address the Focus Question — Is that (genetically modified) tomato safe for you to eat?

You can take either side of the issue, but your opinion must be backed up by facts. Be sure to use correct spelling and grammar. Staple your letter to this Respond sheet.
