This award is designed to encourage and promote emerging young talent within the bespoke furniture industry. It gives up to three new designer-makers the opportunity to win free exhibition space for their entry at Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design. Winners will exhibit alongside and network with established and highly regarded professionals within a selling environment.

Alan Peters OBE was respected throughout the bespoke furniture industry and was a highly influential designer craftsman, teacher and writer. His career stretched for 60 years after starting as an apprentice to Edward Barnsley until his passing in 2009.

The Excellence Award was conceived in 2010 to continue his legacy of encouraging, teaching and supporting the next generation of furniture designer-makers. The judges seek to reward sound construction, well thought out and innovative design with a respect of tradition and importantly an understanding of ‘truth to material’.

How to Enter:

Check that you meet the entry criteria on the next page and then complete and return the application form with a £20 entry fee and a clearly labelled CD containing the following for each piece entered:

-  Up to 6* (digital 300dpi) images. These should show your overall completed piece, detail shots that show the quality of your craftsmanship and any other relevant features such as innovative production methods etc.

Remember, these photos are representing your work so should be as clean and clear as possible to give your work it’s best possible chance. Don’t just send us all over images, show us your skill – close ups of your crisp, tight joints, what’s on the inside, innovative features etc. The file name must include the photo number, your name and your piece title. E.g. 1. Joe Blogs, ‘Onzo’ Chair.

* If you are submitting a chair as your entry, one image must be a side elevation of the piece that clearly shows the side profile of the chair frame, seat and back angles.

-  Each photograph may be accompanied by no more than 25 words.

These should be in a separate Word document and clearly labelled with the number of the photograph that they correspond to. The file name must include your full name and your piece title/name.

-  150 words detailing other information, relevant to the entry, such as: inspiration, materials choice, techniques used etc.

-  75 words describing your future aspirations and ambitions regarding a career within the furniture industry.

-  A 100 word description of yourself and your work. If you are one of 2014’s winners this text will be included in the CCD catalogue alongside your contact details and an image of your entry.

Please note, this text may repeat information that has been written in the other descriptions requested as part of the entry process. This is a draft only, CCD will edit it and make suggestions if necessary. In general, please try to make it interesting, perhaps mention a recent work placement, your inspiration for entering this profession, or what path you hope that your career will take. It should promote you and your work to potential clients.

Terms & Conditions:

We’ve tried to make the entry criteria as broad as possible so that it can fit around most syllabi but there are still some rules and requirements to follow:

1.  Entrants must be aged under 30 on the application deadline (Friday 16th May 2014).

2.  Entrants must be either studying on a furniture designer-maker related/appropriate course or in their first year of business as a furniture designer-maker within the British Isles.

3.  A designer-maker may enter as many pieces as they wish. Each piece entered will require a £20 administration fee payable to Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design. A designer-maker will only be invited to exhibit their highest marked piece at the exhibition, should they win.

4.  Any piece entered must have been designed and built by the entrant.

5.  The judges will be asked to mark entries out of 10 for Craftsmanship, Design, Aesthetics, Use of Materials and Originality. Based on these marks, up to three winners will be invited to exhibit their entry at Celebration of Craftsmanship and Design 2014. This space will be complimentary, however all other standard exhibitor terms and conditions apply (available at www.celebrationofcraftsmanship.com or on request by post).

5.1 Although innovation and the use of modern equipment and techniques is important for any maker to explore, this is primarily an award for handcrafted excellence and entrants are required to declare and detail any use of computer numerically controlled (CNC) machining that has been used in the production of their entry. This will not necessarily be viewed negatively by the judges, as long as it is used appropriately in the context of fine furniture production, however failure to declare it could result in disqualification of the entry as a breach of clause 9.

5.2 Unfinished work may be photographed and submitted along with design sketches and written details of the work yet to be carried out. The submission of unfinished work is not encouraged if at all possible but we appreciate that our deadline does not fit perfectly with those of many courses. Judges will do their best to look beyond any work that still needs to be completed but cannot guarantee that an incomplete piece’s final scores will not be reduced relative to what it may have achieved had it been completed.

6.  If it is deemed necessary, the judges may invite a fourth judge to examine the entry in person. A guest judge that is local to the entrant will be sought by CCD and arrangements will be co-ordinated by CCD to facilitate a meeting.

7.  Winners will be responsible for delivering their entry on Tuesday 12th August and collecting it on Monday 25th August to and from Celebration of Craftsmanship and Design in Cheltenham and will be afforded the same publicity etc. as standard exhibitors.

8.  It is expected and recommended that winners will make every effort to be present at the preview evening on Friday 15th Aug 2014 which is the premium selling and networking opportunity. Winners are welcome but not required to be present on any or all days that the exhibition is open to the public to interact with other exhibitors and visitors.

9.  The organiser reserves the right to refuse to exhibit any piece that they feel has been misrepresented in the photographs submitted when it is delivered to the gallery and no compensation will be offered for time or travel.

10. The judge’s decision will be final.
