Petition to protect the Beekeepers nature reserve and surrounding region
from gas fracking ACTIVITIES
To the President and Members of the Legislative Council of the Parliament of Western Australia in Parliament assembled. We, the undersigned residents of Western Australia, are opposed to the Government’s approval of the proposal by Norwest Energy to clear 185 hectares of high quality vegetation in and around the Beekeepers Nature Reserve. The company plans to use the survey results to site further fracking wells and develop a commercial gas fracking field in this region. Mid West residents, along with WA’s beekeepers, botanists and local conservation groups strongly oppose this project and have appealed at every stage, but these appeals have been dismissed. Commercial scale gas fracking could threaten our water and health and other more sustainable industries in the region, including beekeeping, tourism and farming.
Your petitioners therefore respectfully request the Legislative Council to conduct an urgent inquiry into the approval, including:
- The lack of public assessment of environmental impacts on an area proposed for UNESCO World Heritage listing because of its globally significant biodiversity;
- The lack of consideration of impacts on the tourism industry and amenity values of the Nature Reserve and the surrounding area;
- The lack of consideration of the impacts of the proposed gas fracking activities to follow the seismic survey work, including risks to groundwater, vegetation, endangered species, public health, and impacts on amenity and surrounding land uses; and
- The lack of community consultation prior to the issuing of approvals and the lack of consideration for local government policy on gas fracking.
