The 114th Congress (2015-2017) was sworn in on January 3, 2015. The new Senate is composed of 53 Republicans (54%), 44 Democrats, and 2 Independents (who caucus with the Democrats (totaling 46%). The new House of Representatives is composed of 244 Republicans (56.6%), 186 Democrats (43.2%), and 0 Independents. The 114th Congress includes 12 new senators (11R, 1D) and 52 new representatives (36R, 16D). This Congress has more female members and is more racially diversity that ever before in history. Congress is 81 percent male and 19 percent female. A record 104 out of 535 members of Congress are women. Twenty five percent are new to political office. Fifty three percent are over 50 and 20 percent are over 60 while 14 percent are under 40. The new Congress is 80 percent white, just over 17 percent of which is non-white, including 8.5 percent African American, 6.9 percent Hispanic American, 2 percent Asian and 0.3 percent Native American. The new Congress is 92 percent Christian, 5.2 percent Jewish, 0.4 percent Muslim, 0.4 percent Buddhist, and 0.2 percent Hindu.
