What do I do if I owe a tax payment?

To make a Federal tax payment, you have three options:

  1. Mail in your payment by making a check or money order payable to the “United States Treasury.” Then,detach the payment voucher on Form 1040-V and mail this in with your payment to P.O. Box 802501 Cincinnati, OH 45280-2501. Include your phone number and social security number on your check or money order.
  2. Pay online with IRS Direct Pay. This service is free if you pay with a bank account, but service charges apply when you pay with a credit card. To enroll, visit
  3. Pay in-person at the Columbus IRS office (200 N High St). The office accepts checks, money orders, and cash payments. Call 614-280-8691 for more information.

To make an Ohio tax payment, you have three options:

Box 182131, Columbus, OH 43218-2131. Include your phone number and social security number on your check and money order.
  2. Pay online with a credit card (fee may apply) or bank account by visiting
  3. Pay with a credit card (fee may apply)over the phone by calling 1-800-272-9829. When prompted, enter Ohio jurisdiction code 6446.

What if I can’t afford to pay my tax bill?

If you cannot afford to pay your taxes or doing so would create a hardship, the IRS will usually place your account into a “Currently Not Collectible” Status. This will prevent the IRS from garnishing your wages or bank accounts even though you haven’t paid your taxes. You can request this status by calling the IRS at the number on any notice you receive or at 800-829-7650.

If you need help getting the IRS to stop collection on your account, you can call The Legal Aid Society of Columbus at 614-241-2001.

If you cannot afford to pay your State of Ohio taxes in full, pay what you can with the return and then, once you receive a bill from the State of Ohio, you can set up a payment plan. Use the contact information on the bill you receive.

What if I can’t pay all of the taxes that I owe at once?

You can make monthly payments through an installment agreement if you're not financially able to pay your tax debt immediately. However, you will be charged an installment payment fee as well as other possible penalties and interest fees. The IRS will keep any future tax refunds until your tax debt is paid in full. What if I already owe past due taxes but need my federal refund?

Has the IRS been taking your refunds to pay past due taxes? If you are in a financial hardship situation, you may be able to get the IRS to issue your refund despite the debt if:

1)You do not have any other past due State or Federal debts (including child support and student loans),

2)You have past due utility, rent, or other bills for necessities,

3)Youhave a hard time meeting your monthly expenses, AND

4)You contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service at 1-877-777-4778 the same day you electronically file your return or before you paper file your return to request help with a “hardship refund offset bypass.”

How do I submit an amended return?

Include copies of any schedules that changed or any W-2s you did not include in your original return. For Ohio returns, remember to include forms IT 1040 and IT RE. Send a copy of your return to:
