WELCOME BACK!

August 10, 2015

Dear Parents,

I am very excited about teaching your child. I am looking forward to working with you and your child. This is a very important time in your child’s life and together we can make it successful.

I look forward to working with each of you so that together we can provide your child with the support, encouragement, and opportunities that will allow him/her to grow and mature into an enthusiastic, responsible adult. Good communication between teachers and parents is a key to a successful year. My classroom is always open to you so that you may share in your child’s learning experience. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. I will return your call as soon as possible. I know that this will be a great year for all of us.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Napier

Below are several items to help you and your child transition smoothly into First Grade and to outline some of my expectations for the year.

Newsletters: Every Monday or either bi-weekly a newsletter will be uploaded to the school’s website. Homework will be due on Friday of each week. The newsletter will list the objectives/skills for each subject area and reminders for the week. Each night your child should practice handwriting and review sight/high frequency words. The type of handwriting used is D’nealian. Also, a tentative test schedule will be included.

Supplies: Your child needs his/her supplies at school every day including the communicator (blue). All students need their own supplies. Supplies will be shared such as pencils and paper. Your child’s name should be written on all supplies. (NO PENCIL SHARPENERS will be ALLOWED). Supplies will have to be replenished throughout the school year. With the supplies, use your parent judgment for the number of packs of pencils and loose-leaf paper that you send with your child (4 composition books are needed).

Homework: Homework will be assigned Monday –Thursday beginning the first day of school. Check your child’s communicator for homework assignments. Homework is very vital to students. It helps them master the skills and gives additional practice; therefore it is very important that it is completed.

Assessments: Test dates are tentative depending on my students’ individual needs. Tentative test dates will be provided on the weekly newsletter.

Absences/Make up work: Parents must send a note the following day when your child is absent from school to excuse your child’s absence. In the event that your child is absent he/she may obtain make up work from the make-up work basket. Students have 3 days to return make-up work. If there is an extenuating circumstance then additional time may be allotted.

It is vital for your child to attend school each day. Missing days will cause a hardship on your child’s academic performance. Only 8 parent notes will be allowed for the school year. Once 8 parent notes have been received, your child will then have to submit all doctor’s excuses.

Progress Reports: Progress reports will be sent home mid-quarter. If your child is performing below a “C” I will request a conference to discuss what we can do to ensure your child’s success.

Discipline: A safe and positive learning environment is of the utmost importance and every measure will be taken to ensure your child’s success. In order for your child to learn he/she must adhere to the guidelines for behavior which are explained on the attached page. The class rules will be taught thoroughly during the next few weeks in class. Fighting, bullying, and disrespect will not be tolerated in my classroom. Our class is a family and we all will get along. Each day your child’s behavior will be recorded in his/her communicator on a monthly calendar (Happy Face -Green) =Great Day, Straight Face-Yellow)=Okay Day, had to be redirected 3 or more times ,(Sad Face –Red)= off –task, disrespectful, fighting, bullying, and excessive talking depending on the offense -office referral .

As a reward for having good behavior we will have Fun Friday every other week. In order for your child to participate he or she must receive all green happy faces for behavior for two weeks (No Exceptions). Remember, Fun Friday is a privilege.

Restroom: We have a restroom in the classroom. Students will be allowed to go to the restroom as needed. I am aware that emergencies do happen at times. If it is an emergency your child will be allowed to go to the restroom.

I would like to thank all parents and students for attending our Open House tonight.
