Trainee Chemical Analyst

Job Description

To support the chemical laboratory team with the analysis of various metals used in engineering.

Reporting to

  • Laboratory Manager

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

  • The analysis of a variety of simple metal alloys used in the engineering industry. The role requires a hands-on approach, working methodically and carefully to undertake chemical analysis using the laboratory equipment.
  • To provide analysed data / findings to the chief chemist for inclusion in customer reports.
  • Writing reports on more straightforward certifications and liaising directly with regular customers, presenting basic data findings as required by them.
  • To support the other chemists in the team, as and when required, in various testing situationsincluding the analysis of more complex alloys, for example, those used in the aerospace industry.
  • To contribute to improving lab procedures and processes.
  • The calibration of balances andother equipment including the spectrograph, as required.
  • Production of computer generated certificates.
  • Participate fully in personal development and training.
  • Undertake any similar level of work allocated by the Lab Manager/Laboratory Supervisorbut not fully outlined within this job description.

Skills Required

  • Keen interest in chemistry and laboratory work, working methodically with attention to detail.
  • Good communication skills are essential as this role will be working closely as part of a team and liaising directly with customers.
  • Good IT skills required for the company network analysis system and using Word and Excel for presenting data and report writing.
  • Ability to think logically and to solve problems.
  • Presence of initiative to gain knowledge and responsibility within the department.
  • Ability to work to strict deadlines and in a busy pressurised environment.
  • Willingness to work additional hours if required.

Experience / Qualifications required

  • Ideally this candidate will have A Level Chemistry and A Level Maths. However, a high grade GCSE in both of these subjects may be acceptable.
  • GCSE minimum grade C in English Language is a requirement.
  • Reasonable knowledge of GLP and COSHH awareness would be advantageous
  • Keighley Laboratories will provide training and support the candidate through a day release qualification if necessary.

Hours

37.25 hours per week

Mon-Thurs8.15am to 5.00pm (one hour lunch break unpaid)

Fri8.15am to 3.00pm (half hour lunch break unpaid)

Holidays

25 days plus 8 statutory days

A new opportunity has arisen for a Trainee Chemical Analyst to join a busy engineering company in Keighley. Working full time Monday to Thursday 8.15am – 5pm and Friday 8.15am – 3.00pm you will receive a competitive salary, 25 days holiday per annum (plus statutory holidays) and a friendly, dynamic working environment.
The role

• Writing reports on more straight forward certifications and liaising directly with regular customers, presenting basic data findings as required by them
• Supporting the other chemists in the team, as and when required, in various testing situations including the analysis of more complex alloys, for example, those used in the aerospace industry
• Calibrating balances and other equipment including the spectrograph
• Producing computer generated certificates
• Participating fully in personal development and training
Training and support is provided including through a day release qualification if necessary.
What you’ll need
