About Professor Hira L. Koul

Hira Lal Koul, from the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India, passed his MA in Statistics with distinction and the first position in the Faculty of Arts from the University of Poona in the year 1964 and obtained his Ph.D in Statistics from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1967. He joined the Michigan State University (MSU) as an Assistant Professor in 1968 and became an Associate Professor in 1972. Since 1977 he has been working as Professor of Statistics at MSU. He was the Chairman of the Department of Statistics and Probability, 2009-2015.

During his career at MSU Professor Koul he has been actively engaged in research in several areas that include non- and semi- parametric inference, efficient and adaptive estimation, reliability theory and survival analysis, inference in long memory processes and time series analysis, weak convergence of stochastic processes and their applications in statistics, and regression models with measurement error in the covariates. He has published more than 134 research papers in internationally reputed journals and three monographs, which are well cited in the literature. Most of his publications are in the leading statistics journals like Annals of Statistics, Bernoulli, Stochastic Processes and their Applications, Journal of Econometrics, Statistica Sinica, Journal of Nonparametric Statistics, and Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference. He has successfully guided a record number of 34 scholars for their Ph.D., who are well placed worldwide.

Professor Koul has served in the editorial boards of many international journals. He was Co-Editor-in-Chief of Statistics and Probability Letters during 2007 to 2013, Coordinating Editor of

Journal of Statistical and Planning and Inference,1995–2008. Sankhya, Ser. A.1997–2001. He was also the Associate Editor of Annals of Statistics, 1994. He has served as Editor/Co-Editor of several edited volumes.

Professor Koul has been a Visiting Scholar at several institutions and universities in Australia, Austria, Blegium, China, Czech Republic, Germany, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, Singapore and USA. He is a recipient of several honors including Fellow of the American Statistical Association, Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, Elected member of the International Statistical Institute, O’Conner Fellow, Curtin University, Perth, 1995, Humboldt Research Award for Senior Scientists, 1995, President of the International Indian Statistical Association, 2005-2006, Distinguished Faculty Award of Michigan State University, 2005, ERUDITE Visiting Professor, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Cochin, Kerala, 2010, and President of the Indian Statistical Association, 2009-2012.

An adorable quality of Professor Koul is the encouragement he extends to youngsters in the pursuit of their research. The beneficiaries are not only his research scholars and colleagues, but also junior teachers and scholars from other institutions and universities through the world.
