Exercises

Complete each of the following exercises as requested to do so in the web-based learning exercise. Save answers in a Word file and send them to Dr. Ellison via Blackboard assignments. These exercises will be graded and count as one quiz grade.

ONE

Review the research projects below. State which ones would probably be qualitative and which ones quantitative and give a rationale for your choice.

1.  Will individual or class education be most effective in helping clients learn glucose management?

2.  What are mothers’ experiences of dealing with hyperactive behavior in their autistic children?

3.  What is the American public’s perception of the importance of different components of health care reform?

4.  What is the role of the advanced practice nurse in management of clients with congestive heart failure?

TWO

Select which qualitative design would be best for each of the following projects and state why.

1.  Describing the experience of nurses caring for clients following bariatric surgery.

2.  Evaluation of a same-day surgical clinic’s services.

3.  Developing a concept of peer advocacy in an assisted living facility.

4.  Describing health problems of migrant workers in south Alabama.

THREE

Briefly discuss a project for your clinical area that could use interviewing as a method for data collection and answer the following questions.

1.  Why would an interview be a good data collection method for this project?

2.  Who would you interview and why?

3.  What type of interview approach would you use (structured, etc.) and why?

4.  Give three examples of interview questions you would use to obtain the best data.

Four

Conduct a 2-minute interview another nurse/nursing student regarding an experience they had that affected them wanting to become a nurse. Use the following open-ended question: “Think about the most influential experience you had that affected your desire to become a nurse and describe it for me.” You may either take careful notes or tape and transcribe their answer.

Turn in the following information and analysis:

1) Briefly from your notes or tape give a synopsis of their answer. 2)Then develop a list of categories that may be used to analyze this type of data (think about if you had 100 of these interviews). 3) Put the data from your interview in the appropriate categories.
